Painted Featherweight Sewing Machine
 

I have a FW machine and am looking to have it repainted (in one of those beautiful colors) or sell the one I have and buy a machine that has been repainted. Have you done either and if so, can you recommend the company that repainted your machine or where you purchased your repainted machine? What would really be cute is to have my machine painted a light pink with red cherries (stems included). I've seen a red machine with white poka dots. Too cute.....

Sounds cute. Just be aware that having a machine painted will probably cost hundreds of dollars. I've seen a paint job offered for as high as $750, and that's with you furnishing the machine.

The ones I've seen with really good paint jobs were done by an auto body paint shop.

Wow! I'd have never thought of an auto body paint shop, but what a great idea! My brother does that on a part time basis (and has all his life), so I called him and asked him about an antique White sewing machine I have, and could he paint it? He said he'd be delighted to do so, and that he had done other sewing machines in his career. I never knew that!

I love my purple featherweight! I bought it from a craigslist seller already painted so I can't help you. The seller had moved to Portland to live with her dad while going to school and decided not to to keep it. Her Mom gave it to her to get her into quilting. (I'm guessing Mom was probably upset when she found out daughter sold it.) The repair tag in the case was an address in Houston. I am guessing that there are a lot of featherweight sellers at the Houston Quilt show so no telling where mine was done.

I know someone who had one done by Leo at Featherweight 221 Factory (.com) but I looked up his page it appears that he doesn't do them anymore. I do know it is expensive. I've heard of people having an auto-body shop do them but I would check Dave McCallum's book for his advice on Featherweight repainting to make sure it is prepped right and you'd probably have to source the new decals yourself. http://www.featherweight221.com/fwrx/index.html

Besides painting, the machine has to be totally torn apart and put back together after painting. There is someone that does it, he has a long list and darn if I can remember the guys name. Maybe ask on the vintage sewing machine board on QB and someone on there may be able to help you. Yes it is very expensive.

Check this thread. One of our members repaints 221's and 301's. The machines look great, and I'm sure you can get references. Be sure and post a pic of your finished machine.
