Have any of you used Paintstiks in a quilt? They look really interesting and I got some the other day to try out but I wondered if anyone here has tried them and how they worked for them.

i love playing with paint sticks---the shiva ones?
they are nice to work with- and permenent.
easy to blend-nice color selections

i normally dye fabrics once in a while it is fun to play with paintsticks or colored pencils and do some design detail- or just enhance colors here & there

I want to use the snowflakes for the start of my Row Robin but not sure about how easy it would be to do.

I would have loved to use them but can't due to my asthma. Thought I would post a word of caution to fellow sufferers - I was fine with them at the quilt show but when I was home in a smaller room, the fumes were too intense so had to give them up.

There's a class at Quilt University on Shiva Paintsticks. It starts July 8th and is taught by Daphne Greig (remember the quilter whose quilts were marked up by US customs on her way to Quilt Market last year?)

Here's info on the class (click on the supply list for all the detailed info and a class outline). It'd be well worth the $36 registration fee. http://www.quiltuniversity.com/classlist.htm#Paintstiks

Thanks for the Class info.. I have not taken a Quilt university class before I'll have to look into that.

you really do NOT need a class on using paintsticks...
you can watch videos on youtube cheaper and learn more!
NOthing against Qu, I just took another class on there, but the paint sticks really only require practice and I tell my students to buy some of the fattest crayons they can find and practice rubbing things with those first to get a FEEL/HAND on how the shiva sticks work. I stencil with them, do rubbings, what ever I feel will get the effect I want achieve.

no need to give them up...have someone else skin them and then wear a respirator mask when using them if they are still too strong...I find that the smell usually dissipates in about 10 minutes!

I beg to differ. One of the major benefits of QU classes, other than the material and instructors, is the community and the ability to ask questions of other classmates and the instructor as you go through the lessons. You'll never get that interaction with a youtube video and I sincerely doubt that anyone would ever learn MORE from youtube than from QU.

I agree GhostRider ... nothing beats a instructor right there to work you though any questions or issues, or redirect when you are headed in the wrong direction. Plus you get the added beneifit of having others give inspiration through their work.
