Try breaking a bit of the thread. If you can break it easily, its too old to sew with! You will be sorry if you put alot of time into piecing something and it all falls apart with ancient thread. It gets brittle.

i use paper-sided pre-wounds in my Juki. I would put the spools in a pretty jar.

I also have big mason jar of wooden spools. I think they are really cool.

I tie ribbon through the holes and decorate small Christmas tree for the sewing room. I tie small scraps of material on it also.

I, too, have a little lamp that was made out of a mason jar and I keep all of the old thread in it that has come my way!
