paper pieced project

Some of you were kind enough to give me some advise about this project in a different post. I finally was able to finish..... getting those points was awfull. Should I leave as is , or cover with a circle?
I think it needs to be covered with a circle. I haven't tried to match that many points so don't know what I will every do when I have to.
I think I would cover it with a circle made from the same red fabric that you have used in the block. Oh and look .... there are circles on the red fabric. Perfect! By the way, it is a great block with wonderful use of colors/fabric! When I try to match up points like this, I usually have to baste the piece first and then fiddle with it until I can get it right .... or at least close. That was a tough block to do.
Totally agree. But before you do a circle see what happens with a temporary hexie. Then compare. Just an idea. You had some really sharp points to have to work with.

I have trouble matching points on a pinwheel block! I love the colour choices and would agree a circle or perhaps hexagon to cover the centre. Agree with KLO - that was a tough block!
You did really well getting those points to lay flat. I might add a button if it is for a pillow or maybe a Christmas embroidery patch.
You did a great job getting the block to lay flat! The colors are really nice. I think it does need something in the center. Depends what you are going to use it for, but I would go with either a yo-yo or an appliqued circle.
good to have a challenge.... this was definitely outside my box.... I think I will try it again after Christmas..... lots of matching... even with paper pieceing... Thanks ladies... I will post a finished product.....
If I were to guess the biggest obstacle in making this more accurate is careful ironing. The outer parts of this design align well but where you get a little off is when you sew and flip the red and cream. Try a dab of a glue stick to prevent fabric shifting when sewing...plus ironing the seams open when a lot of points come together. Add something in the center and try again!
Yes, do try doing another after the rush of the holidays......you cannot leave this challenge unconquered!
someone had posted a "fix/modification" for making those types of centers were more manageable. it looked really nice/intentional, and had fewer seams meeting at the center. maybr some else csn find it and post the link to it?

Beautiful block. What is the name of the block, please. BrendaK
How about a cute yo yo? I can see that you sewed half together with the other half. On the next one try sewing the points one at a time, I know I have better luck that way. If you use a yo yo you could still sew a button in the middle of the yo yo. Be sure to share when done. Those points take a lot of practice, pressing and PATIENCE!
Brenda, it is a free pattern on Crafty... never saw their finished product... only a photo... maybe they had trouble too.... lol. I think it is tracey jay quilts.... if you put that in the search at Crafty you should find it.

I would also suggest that as you add two sections together, you pin your points before you sew. Then, when you sew, your needle should hit one or two threads outside the point, so that when you open the two pieces, you still see the point. I made this PP wall hanging several years ago from a free Carol Doak pattern. I am not usually a pinner, but I used a lot of pins putting this together.

Yes they need to be cover. Other then that this is very pretty.

There was a posting on Quilting Board a few months ago about how someone solved this problem by adding another piece so there was only four seams to join. It was a great tip but I can't find the posting Perhaps someone else is better at searching than I am. That tip would solve this problem.
The tip was where you have eight pieces coming together take two of the pieces and sew a small piece of coordinating fabric over the point and then cut the point away underneath. Do this for the remaining pieces. You now only have half as many points to match. I feel I'm not doing a very good job at describing it. She provided pictures to illustrate it. I hope someone else can help find this link because it was a super tip. |
I found the link to a solution for bulky paper piecing center seams. Here's the link and all the discussions. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the link. I spent some time looking yesterday, but never found it (though I did find some other patterns I liked).

A circle or a octagon. I would consider an ocogon in order to continue the straight line theme. Try some sample shapes before you appliqué the shape on.
Your block came out beautifully, colors and fabric excellent choices. I would definitely put something over the center of the block.
or you could unsew the middle and do what pennif did in her correction & make 8 seams into 4.
I hand basted some troublesome seams and that helped a lot when I sewed them by machine. I would rip that center seam and hand baste it to see if that helps.
You have made the outside border come together so well, I wonder if the pattern itself was the cause of the mismatch.

You did a good job getting this block done. I saw the first post and I bet you thought it would never be finished so well.
The pattern you chose to PP is not the easiest and you did good. Take a minute and audition a circle of a few different colors, in the center and see what you like. I might try black. It is going to be fabulous when done. peace |
Looking through " What's New" and found this idea. Take a look. It may help with the center bulk in your block. I think it is a great idea. I will use this in the future.

I would definitely cover it with a red circle. But don't give up on this block, try it again with you have more time to play around with the points. Please don't let it get the best of you.
How about a YoYo or a button??? Love the fabric you used. You are going to come up with some creative way of hiding the error and no one will notice it but us.

Love it! Looks like the circle was suppose to be there all along.
Looks terrific! |
Often it is a pressing issue that causes the points not to match perfectly. You wouldn't think pressing one way or the other would matter, but it does. Sometimes they need to be pressed open to match up right. It is a bulk problem that when you open and press the seams becomes a flat and matched seam.
