Paper Piecing on Craftsy...

Has anyone ever taken a class on paper piecing on Craftsy and if so, which one did you like?

Or, are there particularly good YouTube videos out there?

I've looked at a few, but I'm still not clear....I thought I had it, stumbled through one quarter of a block and when I went to do the next quarter I was confused again. (Maybe it's just me!)

Any suggestions?

Watson

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzW...bktY4JITE8j5BQ I like this video.

ManiacQuilter2 02-09-2016 08:37 AM

If it is free, go for it. There are too many free videos to watch.

GailG 02-09-2016 08:47 AM

Thanks, tessagin, for the video link, but this was a very confusing one for me. I couldn't see what she was doing and the purpose of the freezer paper other than that the fabric is "glued" to the fp. I understand about the false stitching to perforate the lines, but this could have been done on the pattern piece. I saw a video recently (can't remember where, but I will search) where a special ruler is used to trim those 1/4" seams (could be done with that particular ruler, though). The directions were a bit clearer.

I like Carol Doak's DVD and some of her books. She is the queen of PP.
Can't go wrong with her. I believe she's on Craftsy.

ratherhaverain 02-09-2016 09:18 AM

I was able to borrow Carol's book and DVD from the library.

I use the Twiddletails freezer paper method for "no tearing off paper" method, but I just tried to bring it up on their site and cannot find it! I have a copy but don't think I can give it to you! Can anyone else find it?

OK! I found it! http://www.twiddletails.com/images/FPFtute/FPFTute.pdf

Hi
not a class, but there's a fantastic free paper piecing pattern available from craftsy for Harry Potter fans. It's a bookcase with lots of relevant blocks, eg Hedwig, Trevor, a cauldron etc. I used about half of the designed blocks to make a wall hanging.

Just do a search on craftsy for The Project of Doom :-)

cheers, K

Carol Doak has two courses on Craftsy. She's an excellent teacher. Ann Peterson also does a section on Freezer paper paper piecing in one of her Craftsy classes, I think it's the one on playing with curves. She is also an excellent teacher.

I have taken several classes and I have found they have all been very good. If you don't get something ask a question or go back a segment and watch it again. You will figure it out or they will help you understand. I have Carol Doakes books and DVD which makes it even easier to understand. Her system works great!

bjchad 02-09-2016 12:45 PM

I've taken 4 paper piecing classes on craftsy. All were good but if you are only
going to take one I would recommend either Mastering Foundation Paper Piecing or Quick Strip Paper Piecimg.

SuziSew 02-09-2016 01:16 PM

It can be a little tricky to master (not that I'm a master!) but before looking as special techniques (i.e. freezer paper method) get the basic method down first. Carol Doak is a great place to start. However, be careful...it's addicting! :)
Good luck!

I learned paper piecing through reading blogs and free youtube videos, plus advice from experienced paper piecers on Quiltingboard. Oh, should add AND... trial and lots of errors. Some even had to go in the garbage. I love paper piecing!

Onebyone 02-09-2016 02:21 PM

There are a lot of different ways to paper piece. The best is the basic way taught by Carol Doak. You will have the basics learned and that will help you explore the other ways. I have tried about every new paper piecing technique there is but always come back to the basic.

I paperpiece a lot, and I use the Twiddletails method, too, and would never go back to tearing off paper again. But Susiesew might be right about learning the basic method first. I used the traditional method for a while before I stumbled upon the freezer paper method, and it might have helped me understand the concept better. Or who knows? I might have been fine with the freezer paper from the beginning.

I bought the craftsy class with Carol Doak. Love it. You can watch the parts you don"t "get" any time 24/7. She is very clear. I got it when they had a sale.

Geri B 02-09-2016 05:11 PM

I'm a carol Doak fan...before watching her DVD I hated pp! Now, altho it's not my favorite thing to, I now at least can do it correctly. I only do it if I really like the pattern enough to "think backwards" and pp( my opinion). Actually working on one now...hadn't done one since last year, so I really had to dust off the brain cells...but after the first one..all ok

Maureen NJ 02-09-2016 06:32 PM

I took Carol Doak's Craftsy class. Excellent!

Cybrarian 02-09-2016 07:59 PM

I have both of Carol Doak's classes and Peggy Martin's. They are both excellent teachers for paper piecing. Love their teaching methods, very clear and detailed. Enjoy!

Watson 02-10-2016 02:57 AM

OK, bought Carol Doak's class and have watched the first episodes.

We'll see if I can do this or not.

Thanks, all.

I am working on my paper piecing skills too. I have the basic book by Carol Doak. It has the basic technique along with several pages to use during the process. I think it starts with the little heart shape. Good Valentine shape to use.

I also looked for the free videos on paper piecing as 'ManiacQuilter2' mentioned until one would click with me on some part of it than another. I was working on one and had to use my seam ripper a lot, and then seen what I was doing wrong until it clicked. Once it clicked, I had so much fun. I want to do a big block soon to make me a mini quilt for the wall.

I took Carol Doak's class and another one that showed paper piecing the quick way. I liked Carol's the best. She is a great teacher and I learned a lot from her

yes, I have purchased Carol Doak's class on Craftsy and I feel she gives great instruction. PP is on my list of goals for 2016 in hopes of improving my skills.

Karamarie 02-11-2016 05:25 AM

For me paper piecing was one of those things I didn't "get" right away but kept trying and pretty soon it just clicked. I did take a class on Craftsy and just kept trying. All of a sudden I got it and like doing it so hang in there. I would suggest using bigger pieces to practice on and it will just click one of these days.

Lafpeaches 02-11-2016 08:16 AM

I have seen Carol Doak on some quilting show. I bought the Nancy Martin's craftsy class and am going to try some of her patterns.

This is the one I like. It's from Connecting Threads. Go to connecting threads.com, click on "freebies", click on tutorials, click on "paper piecing". There several. You might check them all out but the one I like is:

Same here. Carol Doak works PP the traditional method whereas Peggy Martina works it in strips. It is maybe a little more wasteful but it was an enjoyable method for me.

Fabric Galore 02-11-2016 04:52 PM

I signed up for Quick Strip Paper Piecing with Peggy Martin on Craftsy and I really enjoy it. I signed up for the class 2 years ago when it was on sale and I can still go back and review certain lessons, ask questions, or take notes so I understand it better. I find this is much easier for me than a book and I like the fact that I can ask questions about what I am seeing. I definitely think it is worth it if you want to do a beautiful star or pointed quilt.

Carol Doaks class is on sale http://www.craftsy.com/class/masteri...45858~o56tr8t6

I highly recommend Carol Doak classes for learning to paper piecing. After you learn how then you can explore some of the other ( techniques) like the freezer paper method, but learning the basics first helps immensely. Carol Doak is a great teacher and offers a couple classes on craftsy. She also has a very active group on her site and has free quilt projects/ patterns going all the time

QuiltnNan 02-12-2016 04:31 AM

i like the fold back method of paper piecing... i found it just by googling it. with this method, you don't have to tear off the paper at the end. and if doing multiples, you can reuse the same pattern a few times.

DonnaC 02-12-2016 11:27 AM

If you want to try a good "freebie" video first, the Crafty Gemini just did a paper piecing video last week. Here's the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gi7HChpzN8

This is the one of the videos in her series produced with Missouri Star.

I highly recommend getting the Add-A-Quarter ruler! When I was first learning to do PP, I thought it would be a silly waste of money since I had my trusty 6' X 1" ruler and could use it to measure that 1/4". Well, let me tell you, if you're going to do PP, that AAQ ruler makes the process soooo much easier!

I completely agree. Her technique is easy to follow. Her Foundation paper piecing class on Craftsy is worth it. You can ask questions and rewind the lessons as much as you need.

patski 02-12-2016 07:33 PM

check out EZ piecing. They sell a pattern printed on fabric, I am finding it much easier to learn it this way

JanomeBabe 02-16-2016 05:39 PM

Peggy martins class on Strip paper piecing was fantastic! The way she teaches it was inspiring!! much easier than folding back.
