Would you be able to use quilt basting spray instead of fabric glue for paper piecing?
Thanks |
I don't use any adhesive at all- I just hold it in place. That probably isn't correct but it works for me. I have used a plain old glue stick, and it works very well, but holding the fabric in place is just easier for me.

I use a small pin when necessary, but usually just hold them in place.

i don't use any type of adhesive either.
i only pin the pieces when i've fussy cut and need the design to center perfectly - otherwise i just place it over the section and sew on the line. |
I use Elmers school glue stick. It's an essential tool for me. I can't paper piece without it.

Elmer's School Glue is not a glue, it's a thick starch. It will dissolve in water. Fabric stuck to paper or to fabric will pull apart easy, even after heat set. I have diluted it with water and used it in a spray bottle for extra heavy starch. Great for pleats in clothing.

Always learning new stuff here!

thanks so much for letting me know about this. i'm going to have to give it a try.
i work with very long curving pieces in my quilts and i'm always looking for ways to stiffen the pieces so they're easier to work with. i learn new stuff here every day. |
Great idea!

Be sure and protect your iron by using a pressing sheet. The diluted Elmer's will be heavy enough build up on your iron.

Wow, so many great ideas. I have elmer,s school glue and I am wanting to learn to do some applique, not on the machine but by hand. This I can try .No wonder I love this board so much, always learning something new.
Thanks quiltingb12 for asking this question. Ninnie |
so you have to wait for the glue to dry before you can start stitching?
if not doesn't it get all over the needle |
Sharon Schamber uses elmer's glue. She has a video on binding quilts using it.

I use the iron and it dries instantly. I don't use but a little dot or very thin line of glue to hold fabric and when I dilute it, it's like starch but very heavy.

soooooo,
can you mix your own starch and fill one of those small bottles with a tiny pointy hole? would that hold? |
