What is Paper piecing? I know what english paper piecing, and have done some, but what about the other? There are a lot of patterns I want to do with a lot of little points, like the new york beauty ones(it will be a very long time before I even think about attempting  )
Thank you for any tips, or explanations |
in simple terms - the pattern is printed onto paper or any other foundation material and you place the fabric over the area you are working on and sew on the line to do the piecing. it allows for detailed precision work.
its great for working with points, odd shapes, and you can also use it to work with fabric that normally wouldn't sew together well. some times the foundation is taken out after the piecing is done and in other cases the foundation is left in. |
I love paper piecing. The best advice I can give you is order Carol Doaks dvd. You can read and look at pictures all day but I can almost guarantee you'll be confused and frustrated if you can't see it done for the first time.
She has a preview of the dvd on her website: http://www.caroldoak.com/movie.php |
I've done a little paper piecing now and I really like it. My pp blocks look sooo much better, it allows you to be very accurate. I've ordered a pattern for a pp block of a jet plane for my son's airplane quilt, and I'm really excited about trying it. So, we'll see.

The really nice thing about paper piecing is that you don't have to worry about exact cutting. You cut oversize and then trim after you have sewn it to the other parts of the block.
It's interesting that you mention Carol Doak, BellaBoo ! We are taking her Sensational Nine Patch Stars class on Monday. We've been registered for a month and we got the last two spots in a class of 20. It should be great! |
