Paper Piecing
 

I just watched a tutorial from MSQ on string piecing. She used paper to sew the strip to and then when done she peeled off the paper. What is the purpose of the paper. Couldn't you just stitch the strips together and then cut a 10" square from the strips.

The strips won't curve when sewn to paper.

It stabilizes the fabric. If there is any bias at all, the blocks will stretch and warp.

On the other hand, you COULD stitch the strips together.

The quilt or block will lie flat better if you use paper behind as you sew. I've seen suggestions to use old phone book pages, so it doesn't have to cost anything.

I like to use a very lightweight muslin or thin fabric, of course I do not take it off, just leave it on. I just made one like that with flannel stripes and minkee on the back and quilted on the LA. It turned out just fine.

I leave the paper on until I'm finished

you could always use muslin squares to sew strips to. no tearing off.it's called foundation piecing.
