paper piecing - where to stop sewing?
 

When paper piecing, do you sew past the sew line and into the seam allowance, or do you stop right on the sew line? (I hope that makes sense). It seems I have seen tutorials going both ways, and I wonder what are the advantages/disadvantages of each method. Thanks in advance.

I keep sewing into the seam allowance. I want my stitches to stay, and not unravel. A bit more tedious removing papers, but worth it, IMHO.

In the middle of the block, I just go a few stitches past the seam line. On the edge pieces I often sew through to the edge of the seam allowance. Just habit. no idea if it helps anything.

I start on the line and stop on the line. A little lock stitch keeps it secure & I've had no problems so far! It's the way I was taught.

This is how I do it too. Sewing right through and off the seam allowance has never failed me. Not really any extra work removing paper either. I love PPing.

Same here.... I found that my seams were not closed well otherwise.

I agree too. I stitch my stitches thru the 1/4" seam allowance.

Carol Doak who I consider the queen of PP says to keep sewing thru the seam allowance.

I sew all the way through the seam allowance, too. I treat PP as if it were a normal seam.

I sew past the line or the seam allowance. This way I will be crossing this stitch, hence (?) locking the stitch.
