I agree, any pattern will look patriotic if you use red, white, and blue fabrics. This is a simple string quilt, I think it took me all of 2 days to make the top.

I make patriotic quilts for the Honor Flight program (veterans are flown, at no cost to them to D.C. to visit memorials there in their honor) for a group in Colorado Springs. I use t heir guidelines since they are the ones distributing the quilts. The fabric designs, of course, vary, but the pattern is the same for all quilts: The quilts must be approximately 45" x 60" made up of five strips cut selvage to selvage (so, typically, 43" or 44" depending of the fabric dimensions. There must also be a 10" top and 10" bottom border. So, to make my life easy, so I can use my 8.5 inch ruler, I do the following: (1) The five long strips are 8.5" long using three to five different fabrics; I sew these together. (2) The top and bottom cut 10.5" in width and, obviously, the length of the five-strip set. I sew these onto the top and the bottom. Because this does not quite meet the 45" X 60" finished quilt size, I sew a 2.5" (using my 2.5" strip ruler) around the entire quilt. This group requires that the quilts be made using the "envelope" or "sandwich" method. Turn the quilt right side out and stitch all the way around the edge (1/8" to 1/4"). Quilt-in-the-ditch or however else you would like. Hope this helps!

Made this lap quilt recently for a guild project for the Honor Flight Program. Super easy 5 1/2 inch squares, 5 inch finished. You could do much larger squares to make it even easier. |

If you can get your hands on any older Fons and Porter magazines, for a while there they had a QOV pattern in each issue. Not sure if they still do that, because I don't have a current subscription.

You could use any pattern, or I would so. Just use red, white and blue. A double slice by Jenny Doan would be fast and easy. It uses 10" squares. Look on youtube.

Also there are many panels you can add onto for a quick military quilt!

in Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting magazine, they almost always have a QOV pattern that one of them puts together (Porter?) so if you can get your hands on back issues you'll find a goldmine of patterns.
