Pattern ideas
 

I have a layer cake and 7 fat quarters that I need to turn into a queen size quilt. I could add some solid or complimentary fabric but the fabric is so pretty I don’t want to cut it too much. Ideas appreciated.

It's hard to give ideas when we have no clue as to what you are working with!

Your fabrics might be all plains or blenders.
Or they could be all Kaffe Fassetts.
....... etc.

So many possibilities!

But what might work for one, could be totally wrong for others.

Look forward to seeing what you are working with.

In the meantime, get on You Tube and look at tutorials for specific patterns. Look at Donna Jordan and Angela Walters' tutes---lots of pattern ideas. You don't have to watch the whole clip, just see the part that shows the entire quilt to see if it's something you want to make with those fabrics. If you find something you like, they tell you the name of the pattern and it's available for sale.

check out the Missouri Star tutorials. Also, Kaffe Fassett has a pattern that basically are larger squares bordered and offtset .

Another thing to consider is that your fabrics total about 4.5 yards. That's not enough for a queen size quilt, so you will definitely need to add your solids or complementary colors. That may influence your pattern decision. But I agree with the others that seeing your fabrics would help us in suggesting patterns.

I am having trouble uploading pictures but it’s the Robert Kaufman Satuski Cream layer cake. I was able to find 7 fat quarters as well but that’s it. No more to be found

The disappearing 9 patch would work well for what you have. You can make a decent lap size quilt with 9 fat quarters for the blocks. To make a bigger quilt just make more blocks, then you can use your yardage for the border. You would need to get some solid or other fabric to use as the background. I made one using 5 inch charm squares for the 9 patches. You could cut your layer cakes and get (4) 5 inch squares out of each. The nice thing about this pattern is you don't cut your pieces small so it's great for showing off fabric that's really pretty. [ATTACH=CONFIG]602305[/ATTACH]
