Thanks. Maybe that's the problem, I was going at it from the wrong direction by trying to do the large one first. I'm going to try it again in reverse this time.

I wonder if the "boxes" aren't actually framed squares that have been cut in half.
If I were looking at it, the big block is 12", the other block is actually a four patch of blocks, the biggest of which is six inches, which would make the smaller ones to finish at three inches ...
nope, that isn't correct .... Bobbinwinder's numbers are good ...
I didn't see that set of blocks that went with the big block.

Have a question ... those blocks aren't actually HST with a frame ... they look to me as though they are squares with a frame around it, cut in half and then rearranged and sewn back together again ...
If you were to create those blocks with this technique, would you add 7/8 inch to each part of the square, or just to the final measurement of the square you want it to be?
as in:
I want the whole thing to finish at twelve inches, so I would cut the first square at 9 and 7/8 inches, add the 3.5 strips around, then cut in half?
(do you know how many quilts I have made from just this type of thread??? LOL)
what do you think, Miss Bobbin ... would that work? <wave>

I love the way this quilt is layed out. I get bored making the same block for a whole quilt. I like this because it is all different sizes.

On quilter's cache there is also a pattern called Night and Day. I think it is an 8" block.

The thing to always remember about a quilt you are attracted to - - there are the mechanics and techniques it takes to accomplish the design, but many times the design is accented or complicated or attractive because of the fabric choice ...
and, the converse is true! Sometimes, I see a wonderful pattern, but darn! Somebody selected fabric I can't get along with, and it takes a LOT of imagination to move my brain from the picture to options.
This is what is so great about the forum ... someone posts a picture, says: What is this pattern?
Someone will come along to do the math, and then bless the researcher hearts! Someone will come with a website that shows how to make the block ... what a good deal! <wave>

So glad it is the pattern you want. We quilters stick together and always want to help each other - it is so great!

Now maybe someone can help me find a pattern for a horse theme quilt. My brother in law has requested a lap quilt and he loves horses and the southwest style - he lives in Arizona. I don't mind applique but definitely do not prefer it. Any one have any ideas?
