I have been using ordinary chalk. It wipes right off with a soft toothbrush.

I have experimented using a wash-away stabilizer. I use a marker and trace my design on to the stabilizer and then use a small spray of basting spray to adhere temporarily to my top. Then I go to town quilting. When finished, I cut away the excess stabilizer. After I get the binding on, I just throw the quilt in the wash and the stabilizer washes away! It's pretty easy and there is no residue.
