pattern thoughts?
2 Attachment(s)
these are french milled, totally gorgeous fabrics.
the repeats are large and it seems an utter shame to cut them up too much. i was thinking a swoon quilt might be gorgeous, but that would definitely turn them into scraps. do you have any quilting pattern suggestions that would compliment them? i am all ears :) aileen |
Love the fabrics but not sure of a pattern that is always my problem can't decided how to make it into a quilt.
|
So beautiful!!! How about cutting them into largish squares and just put them next to each other like Kaffe Fassett does? Or use a thin sashing. I wouldn't want geometry drawing any attention from the fabrics.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/061...SIN=0615236006 this shattered technique looks fun there is another book specific to big motifs, but I can't remember the name, sorry |
The 'Spectre de la Rose' quilt from the site Kalama gave you would be perfect. Pretty fabrics!
|
How about Hole in the Barn Door? It has some larger pieces and you can use blenders to be the background.
|
How about a Falling Charms quilt? Only I would cut the squares 6.5" instead of 5" and cut the sashing strips 2" wide instead of 2.5". Here is a link (take a good look at the quilt hanging in the background):

This one is called Around the Twist. Imagine using greens in the twist. It would look like a rose trellis. http://anniesquiltorts.blogspot.com/...-festival.html

When I first saw the fabrics (which are GORGEOUS!) I immediately thought of the Kaffe Fassette Bordered Diamonds pattern!!! http://stitchinpostinsisters.typepad...th-jackie.html
|
aren't they? i bought them from a local quilter selling off some of her astoundingly large fabric collection. she bought them on a trip to france. i've never seen or felt anything quite like them. they're not necessarily to my taste, but the person receiving this quilt could not be happier with them. and i am so thrilled to have someone who will truly truly love and cherish them.

"Sidelines" pattern by Maple Island quilts might work to keep them large and enhance the floral prints.
|
I was also thinking of Maple Island's BQ patterns as a possibility.
Not knowing your yardages ... they would be lovely as backings. Your fronts could use the other fabrics. |
They are lovely, I couldn't cut them, that is one reason I keep buying fabric...................hee hee..............calla actually I think I would just make pillowcases of them just for me...................keeping the large scale and having the fabric next to my skin...................
|
the yardage is a bit of a pain, since you mention it. there is a enough of a 9" border print to do a king size quilt, but about half of the prints are only 1/4 yard cuts. the other half are 1/2 yard cuts, and that really pretty rose print is 3 yards. i'm not sure what the original quilter had in mind when she bought them, but i am leaning heavily towards the rose pattern with modifications for this quilt. i'll adapt the fassett border idea i think and frame some of the smaller pieces to bring the block size up.
i'll add in some nice solids/blenders in cream, beige, blue, green and maybe even a light pink polka dot from my stash. the result should be a gorgeously scrappy showcase. i LOVE this part of quilting! so exciting! aileen |
How about Focus pocus. Here is a link but there are more on this board, including Charisma's. Search for them. I have some beautiful Moda Morris. Modernized fabrics and I plan to use this pattern so I don't have to cut them too small and ruin their beauty.

I just ran into this one. http://quilting.about.com/od/ragquil...l_ragquilt.htm

If I had those lovely fabrics, I would fussy cut them to showcase the pattern of each one then border with coordinating solids or blenders to create the design.
The trellis idea sounds like a great way to tie them all together. I remember a beautiful quilt that had large diamonds as the focal "gardens" then smaller ones surrounding and filling in to the edge of the quilt. This one is going to be gorgeous however you do it. |
I've always wanted to make this pattern to showcase beautiful large scale prints such as yours:

You could use the BQ range of quilt patterns, they are designed for large print fabric - BQ1, BQ2, BQ3 and BQ4

How about MSQC's Double Slice Pattern?
|
What about a book "I just can't cut it"? Some great ideas.
|
Attic windows is the 1st thing that popped into my mind.
Whatever you decide, it will be beautiful. |
What about a garden twist? Instead of using one floral print, you could use all of them.

You have a lot of great ideas here but I want to give you one more. This is a "hanky" quilt. Pattern by Moda, which I have permission to share. These large blocks will showcase your fabric and be perfect next to the hankies. Good luck and be sure to share your choice.

I love vintage fabrics. I am in the process of making a very simple quilt cutting the fabric in 15" squares, no frames, etc. Am going to just sew them together. But maybe after seeing littlebitofheavens quilt above I just might have to find more vintage fabric!!!
|
littlebitofheaven - beautiful quilts!

Perfect quilt for these fabrics!

Gorgeous! Horribly agonizing to cut gorgeous fabrics! I saw the "Just Can't Cut It" book and still can't cut using some of those nice patterns. The strange thing is that I have no fear of using, cutting and chopping into ugly fabric with hope because I have seen miracles happen, under a sewing machine, to something that started out ugly. What is strange is that I fear the reverse will happen with gorgeous fabrics. I can't believe I, an adult, get bullied and intimidated by pretty fabric! They get sliced when I notice myself cringing at their sight; the nerve of them in my own house! lol I know...the thought process is silly but it works for me and gets "can't cuts" into quilts, as they were intended for. I have a pile of fat quarters that are getting ready to learn who the boss is right now....grrrr lol. Have fun and can't wait to see what you do with your, hard to cut, lovely fabrics.
