Patterns by Jacqueline de Jonge
I was wondering if anyone here has done any of her patterns. If so, what seam allowance did you use? I want to make one of her patterns but she uses like .31 for her seam allowance.

The patterns I have done from her are paper pieced , or at least the one's I have done... So the seam allowance is what you trim to after you have sewn.
In areas where you are combining sections , you still are sewing on a line on the paper pattern, but trim the sections constistantly, prior to joining. I have done several of her patterns... I do find her instructions.... less than clear/prescise. Her husband does the translations for the instuctions( or at least he used to). |
Has anyone done any patterns by Jacqueline de Jonge?

I guess this is my duh moment, you are so right Lori S!

What?? That's kind of bizarre....

Haven't done any of her patterns but I googled her and now I want to!!!

That would be millimetres (mm) I think. Australian patterns are different they give the yardage in metric (1 metre or 50 cm etc etc) but they still have the pieces cut in inches and the seam allowance as 1/4 inch.

she is not from the U.S. and uses metric measurments-
the patterns (if you are using one of her patterns they are paper piecing-and the papers are in the package---you sew on the line- you can (measure) the lines to see exactly what it is if you feel the need- i've made a couple of her patterns- but have not bothered to measure the lines i just sew on the lines i'm supposed to sew on....but it is very close to a 1/4" --might be scant, like i said i haven't measured it-but looking at it-it looks pretty (standard) |
Neat idea, and she has a conversion chart on her site too.
http://www.becolourful.nl/ I see we have two threads going on this topic. http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...e-t172598.html |

I am working on one of her patterns, but have not completed it yet. Our quilting guild flew her in and we had a 2 day workshop with her. It was wonderful. We each picked whatever pattern we wanted to make, and there is a quilt shop in Texas that carries the fabric she uses in her quilts, so we could order the kit of fabric from them if we wanted. I order the fabric, and was so glad I did. The colors and fabric she uses is fabulous.
If my memory serves me correctly, she's from the Netherlands. She also embellishes some of her quilts with crystals/rhinestones. They are absolutely fabulous. |
I bought one of her kits love it but am a little trepit to start it.

I recall seeing a video that JDJ made. where she finishes a block and then uses a 1/4" foot and sews around the edge of it and uses that sew line to cut along and that creates her seam allowance. If there are no seam allowances in the pattern you are using...I would suggest you use her approach as the way to go. Just keep everything consistent and it all should work out in the end. I made a top recently and used 1/4" and it went together and the pattern had a lot of matched intersections. I know that there is a lot of talk about her directions being poor, perhaps they are a bit vague but I am FAR from experienced and my second paper pieced quilt was one of J. deJonge's fairly complex patterns and if I can do it...anyone can. Just do not get ahead of yourself, keep everything organized, cut fabrics as you go ( possibly creating templates), use batiks and then there is no right or wrong sides to consider and what results!

I use a bit more than 1/4" You can always trim it down later, but can't put it back.
