Very interested in this post. I have a Grand Quilter also just the machine not the frame. I use all types of thread. I did have the problem of breaking thread at one stage. The upper thread had to go through both tension hole guides as mad Hatter pointed out. Hope you solve your problem.

I have had a GQ for 3 years and had so much trouble with broken thread that I pretty much gave up and haven't tried it for 2 years. (I bought it at the Iowa state fair so the dealer wasn't close) Thanks for all the suggestions. I am ready to try again!

I bought a Grand Quilter last year, an ex-demonstration model. I don't use it with a frame but it's mostly for free motion quilting. I found that at first I had a problem with thread breaking. Then I found it was a threading issue. I had not put the thread through the final guide on the right side, just next to the needle. I still find it quite hard to get the thread into this little guide, but it makes all the difference. Since I've sorted this problem out, I just love the Pfaff Grand Quilter. It's so dependable, has so much space, and is a lovely simple machine with a thread cutter.

Well I got my machine back, the service guy removed some burrs, said I had it threaded wrong and the bobbin tension was to tight.
I'm confused as to how it was threaded wrong since the shop rethreaded it and tried it out before we sent it off. Oh well it's working now, time to get it back on the frame.
Thanks for all the tips
Ginger
