When making a scrappy quilt and using a piano key border of all the fabrics used, should all of the strips used for it be the same width or can they be different widths?

I think they are typically the same size, but no one says you have to be typical. If different sizes look good to you, do it.

I like the effect of different widths. Personal preference i think.

personal choice in my opinion

Yup, no rules make it however you like it or want it or if you are short a color by all means make a few skinnier strips. I actually think it adds visual interest to make them different sizes.

They don't even have to be all straight either, you can have strips narrower at one end than the other.

I agree with others that there's no absolute. Of course, REAL piano keys better be the same size!! (laughing...)

I did a piano key border on my teahouse dragon quilt. see (I need help) thread I did on that project. I did it with all the same size pieces. Then again I am one of thoes that will adjust the towels on there racks if one is out of place.

It's whatever you want it to be.

i just did one and used different widths on my Parisian Green D9p quilt. I liked it better...less of a hassle to make sure everything was accurate and even :)

It is personal choice :D:D:D

Now THAT I like....not having to cut the strips all over again to be the same size. I'm sure varied is now the way I will go. Thank you all so much.

I've done a couple of quilts with piano key borders. One was an Easy Breezy which has a large piece of material in the middle, border, then piano keys. Used different sizes on that one. The other has a small border then piano keys all the same width from the various reds in the top. Its really just a matter of taste and what you think looks best.

Vary it. Go on, be a devil.

ckcowl 01-27-2011 12:50 PM

they can be any size you want them to be!
i've seen border strips put together many different ways, the one that sticks out in my mind the most is one i saw that the strips were anywhere from 1/2" up to 2 1/2"...it was way cool!

MadQuilter 01-27-2011 01:02 PM

I prefer them to be the same size BUT it is your quilt and you can make them how you like them.
