I've seen this border on several of your quilts and have been waiting to use this border. Can you tell me how long and wide each "key" should be? The quilt I'm working on is a baby quilt and should be about 35 inches square before adding the border. Each block is 7.5". Thanks.

I don't think there are any "rules". I made my piano key border pieces between 3 and 4 inches wide by about 7 inches long.

From my perspective, it depends on the piecing of the blocks in the quilt. I am probably not thinking in "quilt orthodoxy", but I like the overall look to be balanced. So I would audition several strip sizes against the quilt to see what I think looks best and then decide on the width and length of the keys. If the width and/or length of the strips overpower the blocks, I'd make them smaller. If the keys get lost next to the blocks, I'd try wider and/or longer strips. Just my opinion.

I agree...no rules. Do what looks pleasing to your eye AND gives you the size quilt you want.

I have made them where the keys are not all the same width. No rules!

Yes, me too. And as short as 2.5", or as long as 5".

I agree with auditioning a few different widths to see what works for your quilt, you don't want ti to get lost, but you also don't want it to overpower (which can happen very easily). Good luck!!
