Picking fabric and pattern
In talking with my sister yesterday (my favorite one!) she mentioned that she would love to have a country quilt and I would love to do one for her. This is totally outside of what I usually do - so I asked her what colors she meant. Can you all help me get this together?
1. Her colors are barn red, gold, dark blue, dark green. Is there a fabric line I could go to? Is this like Thimbleberries? 2. What is a good "country" pattern? Something traditional. It can be moderately difficult. Not looking for quick and easy. I would like to get this stuff together now. With what little time I have for quilting, it might then be finished next Christmas. Appreciate any help at all! Merry New Year to all! |
How about involving her ... in both the pattern and fabric choices.
She could mean anything from a simple like a log cabin quilt to a more appliqued quilt. If she is involved she will appreciate all the work you will be putting in it even more. She'll definitely know it took more than $30 of material and only a few hours of work. It would be a good bonding experience, too. If she doesn't live close by ... thank God for pictures and the net. ali |
My absolute favorite easy quilt is log cabins and yes, I think Thimbleberries would be fabulous.

ITA ... let her be part of the process. You're more likely to have her excited at the end, than disappointed. It's too costly for you, to not have her more than thrilled when you give it to her.
Why? Colours ... your idea of barn red, may be a different red than what she thinks, etc. Design ... ditto ... she mayhave a different concept of country, than you! Commitment ... once she is part of the process, then it's harder for her to say, not what I wanted! There are unlimited patterns out there that would look wonderful in my concept of those colours. I first think of a log cabin as it gives so many variations in the end placement of the blocks. Plus, it could be a great stash buster project! And you can go from there to so many intricate patterns. If you want some surprise to it .... let her show you some quilts/patterns she likes, so you can get a sense of what she wants. Let her help pick out the fabrics, even if you don't tell her what pattern it'll be. You may find that in the end, she is thinking of something totally different than where you are starting. Or that as she looks at the quilts with a serious eye, that she switches from country to something un-country! :) |
What immediately jumped into my head was a blazing star (lone star, radiant star - lots of different names) - I can so see these colours making up into a spectacular shimmering star!

These are the colors I lean toward and Thimbleberries is usually where I find the best. I just made a quilt using a Thimbleberries jelly roll and the pattern was Pebbles and Cream (you can find it online) Really fun to do and it turned out well!

When I think country quilt, I always see a churn dash pattern in my mind. Don't know why but thought I would share. Whatever you make, your sister will love it!

I would suggest Kansas Troubles fabrics and pattern. The fabric lines are rich country primary colors and the patterns are basically traditional...country pleasing!

I don't know your level of sewing but when someone asks me to do a quilt, I look up patterns that are interesting to me and whithin my experience level. I then show those to a perspective client. Your sister may fall in love with a Baltimore Album Quilt in needle turn applique if she gets to choose. Maybe you'll be up for that, maybe not.
