Picture Quilts
Hi Everyone!
I'm new to the forum. I have only ever made one quilt, but it turned out awesome! I found a book ages ago about picture quilts, and I wanted to design one for my mum. The thing is that the book included the patchwork part as uneven "bits" as in it had no squares, triangles or any other simple shape, but still had straight lines... and the hap-hazard cuts would all be sewn together and eventually would end up as a picture. Meaning any shape really was possible as the shapes could be of any size. It was a beautiful book, and I have misplaced my copy - does anyone know what sort of quilt I am talking about? I'm not sure if there is a special term for it :( Thanks for any help!! Emms |

I think they are called portrait quilts. I have made 3 that were dog portraits, one of a musician as well as the eagle that is in my avatar. The method for me is the same in each case: begin with a photo, blow it WAY up, simplify it and put together layer upon layer. I suspect it will be quite a bit harder to portray your mother. Here you can see the quilt I made and my old dog. If you use something like photoshop, you will be able to see the planes and color areas of the face.
I can't draw at all well, but the person who commissioned the "guitarist" portrait liked the results. |
