Piece with white thread?
I usually piece with cream or tan. I have a quilt with white pieces and red. Do I piece with white? Will that look ok on the red?
Do a test run with some scraps, press the seams like you usually do, and then decide,
It will look just fine.

Hi,
I love to piece w red thread ~ Aurifil 50 wt mako cotton ~ regardless of the color fabrics I'm stitching. It makes me smile :) Jae |
I use grey a lot. Kinda splits the difference.
But I really don't think it will matter too much with the red.you just don't want the color to show through the white. |
Try some samples. I bet it will be fine.
Don't normally see the piecing stitches so you should be good. Besides variety is the spice of life.
Like you, I usually piece with cream or tan thread. I use Aurifil thread. Today, I am piecing print fabric to white strips. I am using white thread and am pleased with the result; but I think cream thread would work just as well.
I piece with white on every color. I know I should use black for dark colors but I never do. It's never been a problem.

I piece with red too! Except on solid white piece sewn to another solid white piece. I was given 12 spools of Aurifil 50 wt red and I started using it for piecing.
I use either the lightest gray colored thread, or a very light green color. I have found that both of those colors blend well with any color fabric. The light green, I found completely by accident. I was piecing a quilt one day, in that time of day when it is not quite dark enough to turn on the lights. I picked up (what I thought was) my gray thread, and went to town. When I actually turned the lights on, I saw that I had picked up a very light green thread, instead. I thought I would have to undo everything I had done, but to my surprise, I blended just as well as the gray thread.

I use white for most colors...but if it is really a dark color, I will use a grey. Can't see the stitching if I use black.
Im a scrapper so ill use whatever thread color i have laying around, leftover bobbin thread, doesnt really matter on colors... But when i piece white or cream ill peace with white or cream... as for the red.. i would any color i had in the machine.. but thats me..
I only use white in all my piecing no matter what color the fabric is and never shows.

I always piece with white as well.
I have a huge stash of white thread and always use it for piecing. If it shows through, make your stitches smaller.
IN this particular instance I wouold use white. I saw a quilt made by someone who used black thread with a white quilt and it showed thru the fab. So white would be my choice for this quilt. I my self other wise use beige or lite grey for piecing.
I have heard that the traditional colors for quilting (in the olden days, LOL) were black, white or red. Seem strange to us now, but I usually use whatever color is on the machine.
When I'm doing scrap quilts, I try to use up smaller bits of thread on the bobbins, then wind the bobbins with spools that have gotten low. Better to run out of thread from the bobbin, than from the spool. (That really makes a mess that takes minutes to untangle.) |
When I first started quilting in 1992, all I had was white. Nothing else. I did not get into the greys, creams, and other colors until just the last 4 years or so. I do not see a problem.
As someone else said, do a test block and see how you like it. |
I have almost finished a Red & White Courthouse Steps and I pieced it all with pale grey. I was told years ago to only use neutral for light colours, black for very dark fabrics and grey for a mix of the two. Has always worked for me.

I use whatever the color of the quilt is. Makes more sense to me. I was given the spiel about always neutrals from a class I took but as I have been sewing forever, it made little sense to me. Do I sit and wait for a special color to be purchased, no, but I don't go crazy either. I have lots of thread!!
I piece with white all the time on all different colors of fabric and never have a problem with it showing. Pressing the seams to one side as you normally do for quilting really hides any thread that might show in the seam.
The white will be nice. I usually use white myself~
A few years ago, Connecting Threads had a fantastic sale on their "collections". I bought several of them and I usually have a close match to piece and quilt with, in a wide variety of choices. Before that I always used white.

I think ill use the white since id hate for the red to bleed to the white in the seams. Id hate to do all that work to see the thread through the finished quilt.
I always piece with beige or white thread, I gave up using color thread for piecing a long time ago, I only use color threads when I applique.

I'm so glad this thread was posted, it opened my eyes  I am also searching for the right color of thread to match the fabric I'm piecing. I will now use up all these small spools of thread I have from my clothing sewing days and all the bobbins that came with my machine I bought at an Estate Sale, of course after checking to see if the thread is still good.
Just "audition" the thread on the fabrics, and see which one blends in the best, then use that color. That's what I do. I use black, white, cream, tan or light grey, depending on how they audition on my fabric. It probably doesn't matter since no one should see the stitching anyway, but I like my method. We all doing some things just a little bit differently, and the Quilt Police are not going to line up at your door to chastise you over your color selection, I promise!
I use neutrals when piecing and often I simply use what I have in the bobbin. It has never been an issue (white, cream, tan, grey.....)
I piece with either grey or beige.
