I know many of you piece your backings for your quilts. How do you go about it? I am bewildered by it and want to overcome it.

On Riley Blake's Designs facebook page this morning they have a quilt posted called Stars & Stripe Quilt that gives the instructions for a pieced back. www.rileyblakedesigns.com and click on cutting corners tab.

When you say 'piece your backing', I will assume that you are referring to using 45" wide fabric versus wide (109") fabric. Here is a link ~

Now there is also making blocks to help 'piece' the back, but that can get complicated.

I try to use the leftover fabric from the quilt top when piecing the back, so it depends on what I have to work with when piecing the back. I usually start with a square or rectangle & then put borders around it until I get the size needed. I think my Avatar shows this.

Donnajean, thanks. That is what I meant by a pieced backing.

Check John Flynn's web site. I believe under workshop he has a method of piecing on the diangonal. Saves lots of fabric.

It really works.

If you are going to have your quilt quilted by a long armer, check with them first. Most will want the backing seams running horizontal.

I like to use leftover fabrics from the front on the back, or coordinating fabrics from my stash. Sometimes it only takes a few of them, other times it takes a lot. I figure out how to piece it based on how many fabrics I need to use to cover the back, and the size of those pieces. I usually use either EQ or pencil and paper to figure out a design. You piece the back just as if it were the front. I quilt these on my longarm, no problems with the extra seams (so far at least). If there are just a few seams on the back, I place the quilt on the longarm so that most of them run horizontally.

I use left over fabric and blocks. I first print off a piece of graph paper. Then I outline the measurements of the backing that I'm making. I then look at my left overs and see how I can piece them.

I try to use a little of what I have left over from the front as a connection between the two 42-44 widths of fabric I use in the back. If possible I try to make this stip offset from the center (as it seems I can never get it exactly in the center) so it looks like I did it that way by plan, not screwup.
