My LQS talked me out of backing my baby quilt in Minkee - she thought it was easier to use as pieced. So I bought 1/8 yd of Minkee in 4 lovelee babee colors and flannel for the backing, plus some cute fats in little babee prints in flannel and cotton for textual contrast.
Now I'm ready to cut it and I fear it greatly, although I do love to go to the quilting room and pet it! I had planned on scrap-ee nine-patches in sashing. I've looked on this site and UTube but not much enlightenment on piecing. Any one have experience to share? Thanks much! |
I backed. My grandson's quilt in minke...3 years and at least 3 quilts ago and that is the one that gets used. He is over 5 so he does not drag a blankie but he does love the softness of it.

My LQS always recommends Minkee on the back for softness of baby quilts.

My LQS does longarm quilting and they back quilts all of the time with minkee. They are wonderful and so soft. I don't understand your LQS talking you out of it. I don't piece with it, but that is a personal preference.

I backed one time a baby quilt for my niece's son, but i only turned it so no quilting done on it, and they love it so much

I backed my granddaughters quilt with it. Also quilted it. I had no trouble. After I done it, I heard of how much trouble it was. I had no problem with it.

I always back with minky, but don't like to piece with it. Either way, use lots of pins

i don't know why anyone would talk you out of backing a quilt with minkee- it makes wonderful backs- and quilts beautifully!
on the other hand- it sheds like crazy when you cut it-so when you cut it for piecing have a roll of masking tape handy to help clean up the mess- and maybe take it outside and give it a good shake- before trying to sew- and don't panic- it's normal for it to shed like it does on the cut edges. i've seen some wonderful quilts using squares of minkee- flannels- chenelles- and used for appliques but it is going to shed when you cut it |
Thanks all - I'm going to cut it up as I use it, keep an eye on the horiz grain and try to hold down the fuzz. I'm going to wing it and if those 4 1/2" minkee squares cause me trouble I'll just replace them with some less irritating material. This is why my son calls my sewing room the Quilting Lab!!
