pieced quilt backing

hi all...i would appreciate comments on best way to piece a quilt backing, i want to use one panel down the centre and with the sides pieced to make the required width, about 10 inches on either side. i will have someone quilt this for me, is there a best way to handle the seams, ? thanks in advance.,

Just make sure you cut off the selvage edges and press the seams open real well.

Check with your longarmer to see if they can use pieced backs. They also prefer horizontal seams rather then vertical seams. When a top is rolled with vertical seams they stack on top of each other causing a lump.

I agree with Tartan. You really need to talk with the person who is going to do your quilting. They will tell you how they want your seams to run. It also sounds like you want a panel centered. Definately speak to them about this!!!They may or may not be able to accomplish it. And even if they can center it, that doesn't mean that they will think to do it unless you tell them.

Check out John Flynn's method of making a diagonal seam on the back. The directions is on his web site and under lessons (I believe)

I've been curious about pieced backs as well and will be watching this thread. I too have been wondering if the seams should be pressed open.
