Pieced/Quilted Tablecloths

I am "okay" with a table runner - that probably won't have much of anything setting on it.

When it comes to a pieced tablecloth - how do you deal with the lumps and bumps that occur at the seamlines? I don't want goblets tipping over if someone is not paying close attention to how he/she is setting down his/her glass.

Solution ... buy heavier glassware!

However .... If it's not what you want, then why would you make one?

An option would be to do a whole cloth centre and border it up,
so that the seams are not positioned to create tippy-ness!

I just went and felt my quilt on my bed. no lumps at seams. thin batting should work well for a table quilt.

Pressing your seams open should help.

I have a heavily pieced (and heavily quilted) quilt on my dining room table. I don't use that table, so the quilt is really to prevent dust build-up, as well as to make it prettier. I have a smaller quilt on a table that I do use and have never had a problem with glasses tipping over.

My friend removes her pieced tablecloth and uses a plain, 1 fabric, no seams, tablecloth every time she uses the table to eat. I personally would not use goblets/pedestal glasses if they are to sit on seams of a pieced tablecloth. The center of gravity/balance is too high and the glass could fall over very easily. Glasses that are filled all the way down should be fine, unless the top edge is much wider than the bottom base. I would think about making the top as a single fabric and put a border with pieced blocks in it where the sides drop off. Wallah! No problems with tipping.

I have been thinking of making a "table cloth" for the season by starting with a quilted center, such as a tablerunner idea, adding fabric sections to complete the size needed for the table and finishing with a quilted border. Dinnerware would not sit on the quilted portions. I think this would be fun to design and use.

Use coasters :-)

My table cloths that I have made are pretty much table protectors. I don't eat on them. Place mats come out if we eat a meal at that table.

I have a few quilts I use as tablecloths, and they work fine with glasses. I put some clear plastic placemats over them for daily use. My cousin got a piece of plexiglass cut to fit the top of her table and set it over a quilt I made her. She uses it every day. I feel honored.
