I was getting ready to sandwich a lap sized quilt this morning and realized that the backing is about 3" short of being wide enough for a one piece. Crap....that means that I now have to piece in something to make it work. I have a few extra rows of the strips from the front side and am thinking about splitting the backing down the middle and adding the strips to the middle. How do most of you add width to backing without spend $$$ or time?

Just like you said - split the back and add something straight down the middle. I love the pieced backings.

Look at john flynns website. He has info on diagonal piecing tat creates more width. Works really good

yes, if you have extra length, the john flynn method is the way to go, you cut on the diagonal and slide down, it's wider but shorter, that's why you have to be sure you have enough length, i love this method

I agree that you need to try the Flynn diagonal method. Your situation is the perfect application for it. Just remember: It looks scary but when you see your finished back you'll think its magic.

If you have the extra blocks from the front, I think they'd make a great addition to the middle of the backing. Plus you'll not have them leftover.

i peice my backs alot--how ever it works to make it the right side.

John Flynn's method will definitely work in this case.
For future reference there is a limitation for this method in that you need to consider the size of the quilt and the fabric used. It is used "whenever the width of the quilt back in one and a half times, or less, than the width of the fabric you plan to use." ali |
Ditto....I love pieced backings. It makes me feel like I'm plugging away at my never ending stash.l
