Piecing charge
 

Have a customer who wants me to piece her quilt top together. She has all fabric cut. I have set rates for quilting a quilt, but no idea how to charge for this. Suggestions please and thank you.

If you can, determine how many hours it will take. Then charge an hourly fee. Call quilt shops and long arm shops for ideas on hourly charge...should be more than long arming.

Might want to look the pattern to see how complex it is.

Then look at the accuracy of the cutting of the pieces.

Then decide if you even want to deal with it.

Probably the way to charge is by the project.

( I am Slow compared to some other people.)

I would charge by block, sashings and borders. I would have to measure each piece before trusting others cutting.

Good point. If you have to recut or things aren't going to go together well, I'd pass or at the very least charge extra.

yes, by all means, check out the cutting and does she have extra fabric in case it is inaccurate and also that enough pieces have been cut. I would be curious as to why she wants you to piece it as she took the time to cut it all out. None of my business, just seems odd to me.

See is working on another for a relative that she needs to get done. Will be looking at it tonight and make a decision. I already quilt most of her stuff and will probably end up doing this one as well.

If you already are doing her LAQing then you should already have a pretty good idea as to how her piecework is. IOW poorly cut pieces would show in the final flimsy.

Already doing her LAQing does not mean you should feel obligated to help her out. Your "business" is LAQing. If you agree to this piecing, are you opening yourself up to others wanting you to do the same for them? Or is she apt to rely on you in the future, more than you want?

Price? While hourly pay is usually different than LAQ fees, you probably know what you figure you make per hour. Maybe go with the same hourly rate?

Don't forget to include the price of thread if you are using your thread.

Your hourly piecing rate should be at least your hourly LA rate since the time you spend piecing you are "giving up" the time you could be LA-ing.
