I want to make pillow shams for my quilt (star pattern) as I made it with out the extra for the pillow tuck in. (Sorry I don't know how else to describe it.)
So, my questions are: are there any tips I should know before making one? I think I am going to make a couple more stars and put them in the middle of the sham, and then use the background fabric around it. Make sense?
Thanks, this is my first completedquilt (top is complete) do I thought I'd get the input from some experienced folks. THANKS! :)

Carla,
Congratulations on finishing your first quilt. To make the shams, design the top as you wish. Make the sham top the same size as the pillow. Making the top out of your scraps is a good idea so the shams will coordinate with your quilt.
To make the back of your sham, you will need to make it out of two pieces and have the two pieces overlap in the middle with button closure.
Example: Say your pillow is 28" long x 20" wide. Cut two pieces about 35"each (28" + 2" for hem, 5" for overlap) x 21". Make a 1-1/2" hem on the short end of each. Work two or three buttonholes on the edge of one to use in closing.
To assemble, lay your top down first with the right side up. Then lay the back piece with the buttonholes down next right sides together, and then, lay the back piece without buttonholes on last. The hemmed ends will overlap near the middle. Pin around the perimeter and then machine stitch. Trim your corners, turn to the right side, attach the buttons and then insert your pillow.
To make your sham with a flange, make the top as above, then add a 3" (cut 4" wide, use 1/2" seam allowances) band or border all around the perimeter. Do likewise for the back, adding the border after the overlap portion is completed. Assemble the same as above except when pressing. Press one of the border seams toward the border, press the other toward the sham, then trim corners, turn to right sides. Press along the outside edges, then match the border or flange seams, pin and then topstitch in the seams. (Owing the seams were pressed opposite each other, they should nestle together.)
Gee, I hope this is clear. Good luck. You should have a very pretty bed. Suzanne
