Pillowcase

I am making four pillowcases for Christmas as gifts. I plan to make quilt blocks for the front side of the pillow and to place a piece of cotton as a backing for the quilting blocks on the front as my pillow case pattern has 100% finished edges do I need to quilt the quilt top to the cotton back there is no batting the size is 20x27 inches?

I would do some stitches to keep the seams from fraying with use. Probably not as much as if it was quilted

Why not just applique the block to the whole pillow case and secure the middle section with a few stitches.

I did think on that but as the front piece for the pillowcase is 20.5 by 27 inch and the blocks of the pug, cow and dachshund are large blocks ranging for 10x12inch(which there will be two of) to 14x22 piecing the fronts instead of appliqué sound like it will look better and with my low skill at appliqué be easier.
I am using blocks from sew fresh quilts.
Have you used appliqué for such large blocks going onto a small area?

I'm not sure I would want such cute blocks on pillowcases that will get heavy use. You would have to stitch each seam down to a backing to prevent movement of the blocks during sleeping and fraying of the seams when washed. I would put them on regular square pillows to be used as accent pillows on a bed or sofa.

Sounds like a cute project.

Check the pillow measurements as they vary. The fabric will shrink when washed so add a little extra for it. Have you considered a small bed runner with those cute blocks? Just another option.

Thanks for the thought on the bed runner but the pillow cases (now six) are going to three different couples as Christmas gifts and none of the couples use/have any bed runners so I doubt that would be a well received or used gift, at this point two of the pillow case fronts are done.
