I love the frixion pens too! I also use slivers of soap for marking dark fabric, but am hoping they come out with a white frixion pen.

ME TOO!!!!!! Maybe we should all bombard Pilot pens so that they do that!

I use the Sewline fabric pencils. They're ceramic 'leads' in a mechanical pencil and the lines come out by either erasing with any soft eraser or with water (I use a small artist's brush to just 'paint' water over the lines). The leads come in white, gray, and several colors for use on any color of fabric. I like that the lines are very fine, don't rub off while you're working, yet come out easily when you want them to. http://www.sewline-product.com/Sewline_Fabric_Pencil

On dark fabrics I use a chalk marker which works very well indeed. It has a fine metal wheel that dispenses powdered chalk on a nice fine to medium line that is just fine for sewing.

I use these and markers on the back side of the fabric only.

The pens are acid free and archival so that's about as safe as you can get using a marking pen. I had a white line left on dark fabric but when I washed the quilt it went away.

I've done my own test with these pens and they worked fine. I think the key is whether you are going to wash the quilt or not. I wouldn't use them on a wall hanging or an art quilt.
I recently used a green one on a white on white whole cloth quilt. The lines disappeared with the iron as they should. I then washed it in the washing machine with Tide. I did not let it agitate, just soak. Then rinsed it by machine, folded it up and put in in the deep freezer. I came back 2 hours later to a frozen quilt - but not a mark on it. Unfolded the frozen quilt, tossed it into a medium heat dryer and it's beautiful
I agree, - always test a new marking product before using.
As for dark quilts, I haven't used one on that yet.
