I only use 505 spray with great results. I just FMQ two baby quilts and they stayed in place with no puckers.

I'm a hand quilter and love it. I use the old fashioned quilt stands and boards for frames and C clamps to hold it tight. I would LOVE to machine quilt but don't have the nice big long arm and I get very frustrated trying to sandwich everything together.

Spray baste, and I love it!

Spray baste only for me !! and i use 505 only , also when i am done with the quilting i wash my quilt

I pin using pinmoor's to hold them. I was using safety pins, but, found it made my fingers sore. With the pinmores I put the pin in a pinmoor on the end . It's faster for me.

The hardest part was going over the quilt and finding all the little things to get them out. Silly me didn't use a contrast color.

I just bought one of those guns and I love it!! I use it for all kinds of things in my sewing!!! They are tiny and work terrific!!!!!

I use elmer's school glue quite a bit. i have just started using it and I love it. I am making a trip around the world with 2 1/2" blocks so when i stitch all blocks together then I use the glue to line up seams with the strip and the quilt. It helps keeping everything where it should be and makes for a much nicer less stressful quilt. I will post pic when I get it finished.

I use curved safety pins at approximately hand-width apart. Most of the time I do Stitch in the Ditch, so I make sure not to pin in my path of the machine. Once one direction is completed, I take the pins out and finish any kind of quilting still to be done. Never tried the spray and I don't think I will start. (You should see me with a can of hair spray - a disaster at best)

Yeah, me too! I want to know about Elmer's glue. Do you use a Roxanne Basting glue or do you put Elmer's in the syringe?

KathyKat 03-19-2012 05:23 PM

I spray baste and put a few pins in the outer edges because I don't spray very well there to avoid over-spraying. I machine quilt. For tying a quilt, I pin and for hand quilting I baste.

Elmers Glue? Can you expound on the use?

Here's the link to another thread http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...t180790-2.html on the last page there is a long post of how I do it. I've never had any problems with it

suzanprincess 03-19-2012 10:04 PM

COYOTEMAGIC, Do you use this method with polyester batting?

QM 03-19-2012 10:41 PM

I tried spray basting once and went into an immediate asthma attack. If you have breathing problems, don't even try it. I have tried iron on batting. IMHO it is fine for wall hangings, table runners and place mats, but not bed or lap quilts. I think the texture is "off" for that use. I pin baste with regular safety pins. They hold the sandwich layers solidly. I don't have a problem opening or closing them, although many people do. I only use steel based pins as I like the ease of a magnetic pin caddy (mechanic's parts dish) and a magnet on a stick for when I drop one. Several brands of glue are used by many for attaching applique before quilting. If you do this, make sure th type you get will wash out. I have not heard of using it for whole quilts. Hmmm. I have many friends who prefer the bent pins. I have tried them and I don't. It is strictly personal preference. I have also used a couple different basting guns. I found that for me, they jammed too easily and the fabric could wobble a bit out of position. Ugh. I have had a couple of friends who loved them, but they were using the commercial price tag attchers. Now I gues I've said more than you wanted to hear.

Try using 1 inch pieces of fusible hem tape. Place between back and batting and between batting and top. Heat set with iron to fuse all 3 layers. Will stay together and no pins or spray is needed.

Wonderful! Thank you so much for this link. Ever since my knee surgery two years ago I have been scooting around on my butt and reaching in uncomfortable positions to pin paste my quilts. I will DEFINITLY use this method. Thank you so much Prism99 and CoyoteQuilts! :-)

Pat625 03-25-2012 06:18 AM

How is that done??

Doreen 03-25-2012 08:17 AM

I spray baste and I add somke pins. Take care when using the spray. Go lightly and don't over spray. You don't want gunky needles. All sprays are not the same. I use 505 and it's the best I have used.

tjradj 03-25-2012 11:12 AM

Both spray and pins. Generally I pin baste. But if the project is smaller, or I'm worried about tucks because there are bubbly areas in the top (or backing), then I'll spray and pin. (and pray lol)

beatys9 03-25-2012 11:22 AM

I hand baste but have never quilted anything larger than a baby quilt myself. Larger projects were sent out to LAQ. Sounds like spray might be a good option for larger quilts... I'm not there yet.
