Pins
What kind of pins do you use for piecing? Do you have a special brand that you love???
I've been using the general round head pins you buy at Joanne's, but my supply of non-bent ones is getting small and I'm thinking of buying something special! |
Clover has some flower head pins that I love. The ones with the blue flowers are extra fine and glide through the quilting cotton fabric. I purchased them at Joanns with a coupon but haven't seen them lately.
I also have the yellow clover flower pins that are good. All brands are not the same. I wasted money when I purchased a generic brand. |
I use regular glass head pins. I don't like quilting pins, they're too long, too big, have plastic heads and bend easier. I melted one pressing and luckily was able to peel it off my project without ruining it.

I love the extra fine ones, I pin everything all the time.

The ones tallchick linked to are the ones I use for most everything. I love those pins.

Clover glass head pins which are essentially the same as silk pins
i use silk pins. they are thinner and do not distort the fabric as much as the longer, thicker ones. yes, they bend more often, but they are cheap enough to replace when needed
Hands down, Clover patchwork pins. Yellow and blue glass heads.
I use Dritz 100 Crystal Glass Head Pins from J's. Half the heads are yellow and half the heads are blue. Love them. They are long and thin and don't take a big "bite" out of the fabric. Yes they bend when you leave one in too long and the presser foot runs over them but I try not to do that anyway.
I use my flower head pins for piecing but use my yellow ball thicker, stronger ones for pinning my binding.
I agree with SheriA I like the Clover flower head pins. However I have never seen the blue ones but have used the yellow ones for several years. I too have wasted money on the off brand pins. Heads keep coming off.
Awesome ideas! This is fabulous! Do the 'clover' pins have a round ball at the end (not flat)?
I have several different kinds. The thinner pins bend very quickly on me. I must have at least 5 different types. I think my favorite are the Clover with the flat heads. (look like flowers)

I use glass bead long very thin. For rows or heavier thicknesses I have learned to use the yellow ball, thicker pins. I have lots of bent ones and still use them.
Great question Kristijoy. I've been wondering the same thing. All responses are great. And I love the Amazon link. I'll be ordering new pins! :o
It depends on what I am doing. I use the glass head pins when I am going to get them anywhere near an iron. Otherwise, I use the flower head pins since I can hold the tops easier with the arthritic fingers.
I have some glass head Fons & Porter very thin, very strong pins that I love. They don't blend like the flathead flower pins.
Always the Clover yellow and blue glass head pins which are 0.4 thick. They look just like the ones that are 0.5 thick, so be careful to buy the thinner ones. It really makes a difference. They don't distort the fabric and if you sew slowly you can sew right over them without worrying about harming your machine. They are so thin the needle will just nudge them out of the way. If you sew too fast and do hit a pin, the needle just bends the pin. I also have some flat plastic flower head pins I use when I need a longer pin (like pinning thicker areas, binding and such), which have all blue flower heads, dark blue on one side, light blue on the other side, and those are 0.45 thick.

https://www.amazon.com/Boxes-Quantit...+quilting+pins The glass heads are round. The silk pins are a Pain to pick up after one of my favorite QF leaves as they cannot be used with a magnet. |
Sounds like the blue Clover flower head pins are what I need to get. I love the yellow ones because they're flat and long but always wished they were thinner.
I like the Clover Flowerhead pins, Clover Fork pins and try to get them as thin as possible. But use whatever is on the machine I'm working with at the moment.
I have some extra fine pins in a small plastic container with a lid that snaps on that I almost always use. They are new and sharp. I have two containers of them. I don't know the brand.

Lots of pin users! I don't like pins. I only use them when it's a have to. I use Clover Wonder clips instead of pinning block pieces. I use the big yellow head pins for my design wall.
I use the clover glass head (yellow and blue) for piecing. I use the longer, heavier yellow plastic head ones for pinning stuff to my design sheet (they don't always stay). I also use these to hold the top down on the LA.
I love the flat flower head ones for mounting backing to the leaders on the LA frame. |
I love the Clover "silk" pins. They are a nice length but are very sharp and narrow. They can bend if forced but seem to slip in the fabric easily.
The thinnest pins that I can find, that means I replace frequently d/t bending but love the thin ones!

I use the Dritz glass headed pins they are very thin, but sturdy, and I paint all the glass heads with dark blue nailpolish, so I can readily see them when sewing. I purchase them from Amazon, and they came in a tin box, which I like. You can get them in two sizes 1 3/8 or 1 7/8, my Bernina sews over them as well, if I miss taking one from the fabric.

The very fine glass head pins are great, they cost more but are really good for piecing

Clover glass head pins.
I use fine shaft glass head. The thinner the shaft the less distortion you get when piecing. And no holes in the fabric.
Just a reminder, there are 2 notions areas in the Joanns stores. The 'regular' notions area and a quilter's notion area. In the larger stores, most items are in both locations, but the smaller stores may only have the specific quilter's names items in the quilter's notion area. (It is in the area right next to the Keepsake Calico Cotton fabric.)

Okan Arts' current offering has a discussion with photos of all Clover pins--you might find it useful. It's an interesting quilting site; worth signing up for.
