Pinwheels - Seam lump at center
Hi everyone,
Quick question on pinwheels. Is there any way to avoid the big lump of seams at the center? Grading, or...??? I may send this to a quilter when I finish the top, so I would like it to be as precise as possible. Thanks! Ally |
Have you tried twirling the seam? All LAs should know pinwheels will have more bulk in the middle.

Pinwheels and 8 point stars can be tricky to get a nice flat center. This is the one spot where I usually try to get my seams rotating in one direction on each half(opposite ways) and I press my center seam open. I will also sometimes remove a few of the stitches in the seam allowances if necessary.

I do the little twirl in the middle on the block - somebody has to have a tutorial link to share! Helps a lot! Maybe I saw Jenny at MSQC do it!

Eleanor Burns does the twirling thing.

Thank you!! I've been alternating/locking my seams at the center but I'll look for the twirling tutorial. Much appreciated!!

I get out the toolbox and hammer those suckers. That will flatten them.

I use a clapper, it works great with steam to flatten seams.

Here's a good tutorial.
