My 8yr GD is making placemats for her family. We have researched the correct table settings for a dinner for the meals they have and she has appliqued cut-outs for the dinner plate, 2 forks, 2 knives, 2 spoons, napkin and glass.
she selected another pattern of fabric for the back so that it is reversible. The idea is that this will help her to set the table correctly, everything where it belongs, knives turned sharp edge to the plate, etc. Her father is very concerned that she learns table etiquette, unfortunately her step-mother doesn't care. I bought her a feather weight Janome which she brings and uses when she visits. Her SM doesn't have time for sewing although she tells me she is very, very good at it. Anyway, it has been a very enjoyable time and will be a good teaching tool for their family. Just wanted to share. |
Sounds like a great idea, and cute as well!

She's lucky to have a Grandmom that cares...

Would love to see pics - I am so happy to see that you are taking the time to teach her to sew. Just like handquilting-less and less people know how to do it!!!

She is lucky to have someone to care about her and help her learn such a useful hobby! And etiquette, to boot! (A lot more young people need this!) And you have someone to teach! Good things for both of you!
