Placemats
1 Attachment(s)
My DIL would like me to make her some placemats in this shape. Sadly I don't have an original thought and am hoping you can give me some ideas for patterns besides strings.
Thanks for any help you can give me. |
I think you could use any pattern that isn't too big, make it square, the cut it to this shape. Yes, you'll waste a little, but it'd look great. I'd just be careful to make sure the fabric is centered in the middle of this shape, or wherever you want, before you cut it.

upside down Dresden?
|
I would go to Wally World or any dollar store and first purchase one for the shape. Then I would probably make a small block and machine applique it onto a larger background cut in a rectangle. After quilting, I would cut into the desired shape.
|
Some of the most beautiful placemats I've seen are made from just one gorgeous print fabric, nicely quilted and bound. Perhaps your DIL would like to choose the fabric?
|
The shape looks like an apron, could add a pocket for the silverware.....oh and maybe a ruffle! LOL
|
I just did a Christmas one, nice background, looks like Christmas tree branches, appliqued onton ric rac lines going down cute ornaments, circles. plain but cute. try that. bing or google Christmas placemats or holiday placemats, a lot of inspiration there. good luck, show us what you do please.
|
I have made it plain but could use trim around edge. McCalls Quick quilts had one that was divided. about 3yrs ago. Was a summer issue. They were very nice. These are very nice on round or oval tables.
|
I have a very similar shape to this. The pics that came with it are: a solid with a raw edge applique of fruit & veg, a diagonal stripe border around a pieced block centred and a funky one with the outline of a plate, a knife and a fork appliqued on top. The "plate" was labelled. Idea: add a tab to the side to place a napkin in. HTH Shiree.

When I googled images of wedge shaped placemats, almost all of them use one piece of fabric, except this blogger shows a picture of some she made with a central chicken square. http://pirate-sr.blogspot.ca/2011_12_01_archive.html

I have been all over the net to get some ideas for this wedge shape placemat. No luck. I will just do a one fabric reversible mat. Maybe later try some appliqué. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Thanks for any help you can give me. I also tried to search on Yahoo, and there is a question on yahoo answers for the same thing. The recommendation of the answer suggests using newspaper and cutting shapes until you get the shape you are after? Might be worth a try... |
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I have the pattern. What I'am looking for are quilt pattern ideas that can be used for this shape. I know I can use almost anything, was just hoping someone could give me some good suggestions for quilt patterns. I did want to piece the mats.
Thanks for looking for me.

I just checked my pattern, and that shape is not here, (bought it at St. vinnie's) but maybe you could find the same pattern on eBay? Pattern is McCalls 6622 from 1979, but it has the exact shape you want?

I have made many like this as our table is round and these fit nicer. My original pattern was cut from one of the patio placemats - kind of a rubbery feel that sticks and doesn't blow away so easily -. When I make these I use 1 layer of W&N batting and usually put 2 different fabrics on. One on the front and one on the back to coordinate with a tablerunner or mat (e.g. Halloween on one side/ fall leaves on the other). Usually cut my own bias binding unless I have a match I want to use. Have fun......I'm sure she'll enjoy whatever you make.

I suggest you do as Pennyhal suggested but do it on freezer paper 1st and then cut you pattern to look like that, allowing for your seam allowance . Plus you can iron paper to material and cut.
|
That is a very different design. Would love to see the finished product.

Pattern looks like chair cushions I am making. Lots of lovely squares sewn together then cut into shape. Use cut away pieces on back with other material to make it reversible. You can also use leftover material for binding and leave the back a solid color. If you make a design, say a star just make sure it is centered before you cut.
|
Take a look at www.sew4home.com and Moda's site as they have two great ideas for this shape.
|
You could do almost anything. Fussy cut a center or appliqué a favorite theme or design on it -- would look great!
|
Where did you get the pattern? We have round table and they would be just great.
Thanks for sharing R

Looks like the place mat shape is for a round table, for this uneven shape keep it simple one lovely fabric nicely bound.

I made placemats, years ago, with this shape. Draw a "V", matching the "scallops" to the bottom. Lay a piece of fabric, being your "focus fabric" as the V. Then, QAYG strips out, varying widths, to the 2 edges. They came out cute.
