would plaid or striped fabric be good for placemats?

I happen to enjoy plaids and stripes, so I say yes. I have used them both in placemats.

There are no quilt police so if you want to use plaid or stripes in your placemats go ahead. Don't forget to post pics so we can see.

I think stripes look really nice, especially if used as binding. If you had a diagonal stripe in red and white, for example, it would look like peppermint candy canes around the edge of Christmas placemats.

I would think you have to fussy cut the plaids so they look balanced, but plaids would look good too. Very homey.

I used to buy plaid homespun and make dish towels for my mother and grandmothers. I appliqued crochet shapes and ruffled edging to make them fancy. I don't see why you couldn't make placemats that way too.

I too, have made dish towels with homespun and appliqued Tea Pots and Flower Pots as gifts. Never thought of a ruffle,,,,,Thats a unique idea, one I'll have to try. I used yo-yos for the flowers, My friends still have them. I love homespun. Plan a quilt in the near future using Homespun and muslin.

so what exactly IS homespun? I've seen it online but don't really know what the difference is.

I have purchased it at Walmart. They have been pretty good at carrying a decent selection, in various colors. Only by the yard. At one of the few Walmarts that are still carrying fabric.

I think homespuns would be very nice for placemats. You could also make matching dish towels with left over fabric. Maybe put matching appliques on the towel and in one corner of the placemat. A quilt from all homespuns is also on my to do list ( which keeps getting longer & longer ). :roll:

In general, as we use the term, homespun is yarn-dyed, as opposed to being woven white and then printed. It's really not hand woven, most of the time.
