Although I am a novice quilter, i try...as each great grandchild reaches a second birthday to make them a simple quilt. I sent an e-mail to the mothers yesterday evening, (2 birthdays coming up soon) suggesting the following quilt for this year. I asked them to take 4 paper plates and labeling each as to right or left, trace out each foot and hand. I would then take a color solid and cut templates to use. I plan to applique them onto a square...ie: 8 inch square. Thinking in terms of 3 squares across and 3 down as the main attraction, or only pattern for the follow up squares till I achieved the size I want...square1, row one would hold a left hand with a print (using childs favorite color) square next to it and followed by the right hand. Square 1 and 3 of row 2 would have the same print color and in the middle would be in permanent ink or embroidered the childs name. Row 3 would be like row 1 except it would have the feet. I might put sahings between the blocks and just build them up...what do you think. It would be special for them as they grew up to see their hands and feet and what their favorite color was. I could not find hands to serve as an example nor did I show the squares dividing, but am sending a very simple example. What do you guys think of this concept? (Crossing my fingers that I picked up the right picture to show as an example....giggling)

sorry for the paws...but that could be yet another quilt idea for pet lovers, couldn't it. giggling at my silly self and hope it brought a laugh. After all I did warn you I could find a hand shape ...only the feet. Happy New year to all.

It would also be fun to collect them every year or two and make a graduation quilt with little to big feet. Cute idea!

wordpaintervs 12-27-2009 02:23 PM

That would be a good idea. Not necessarily a new quilt each year, but a foot/hand template for down the road for that 'growth collection'...yep...good thinking there. I finally found a supply house for doll stuff. Maybe if I can't get what I need locally, I can take a chance on getting it there. CR Crafts. Will send link if anyone wants it, as I saved the link to my desktop...actually, I will go find it and send using this arena. Thanks everyone for the comments.

I think it's a great idea. What great memories the quilts would bring.

all you need for a photo is your printer and fabric sheets for the printer to print onto. There are several manufacturers that make them. I have made several photo quilts, and family love them. You could add the name and details on each side of the picture in the center row. I think you have a wonderful idea!!!!

I guess I could find the fabric paper on line somewhere. Wal-mart is all we have available in my town, and they have cut way way wya back on what is available. That would work and be neat for her to see down the road.

Such a creative idea! Now if they don't love those quilts to pieces, they will have a wonderful childhood souvenir ... don't forget to put a really nice story on your quilt label for them to read when they are old enough. Great memories.

Since I am a writer as well (find Vickey Stamps) using search tool, I coudl maybe do just that and add it as a backing square using the fabric paper, and making up a short story.

wraez 12-29-2009 01:40 PM

Vickey do you have a blog or other link? I was not getting much by googling your name. Thanks,

Just go to any search tool bar and type in Vickey Stamps, and it has several intermittent spaces with my writings. I also have a website that changes contents from time to time. Some of the emails and web pages are outdated, but not all.

seeking prayer...great grandson #7 may be dying. Born 3 lb 9 oz..t 4 this morning. he is being flown to L.A. Childrens Hospital. C-section done. Extreme shortness of breath. Name is Declan Wallin. A helicopter is waiting, father will fly with the baby if they can stabilize it enought to fly it out. Thanks for accepting an unusual request on this forum, but I seek it in every arena I can at this oint. Thank you. Vickey Stamps

Stitchnripper 12-30-2009 01:12 PM

Oh dear. Saying a prayer right now.

Oklahoma Suzie 12-30-2009 01:42 PM

Sounds like a good idea to me.

wraez 12-30-2009 02:14 PM

Added to my prayer list.

Don't despair.

My friend's grandson was a tiny guy with missing heart valve, had to have surgery shortly after birth and more since born a year ago. Many prayers said and he is with us today but more surgeries in his future. So much trauma for a baby to endure.

God's blessings on you and your family at this time.

thanks so much. My daughter is with my grand daughter and the father flew via helicopter to L.A. Childrens hospital. We have had no word since 8:30 a.m. I really appreciate the prayers. I had a grandson (premmie) that survived birth with a hole in his heart and am trusting the Lordin this as well. Again...thanks to all

Vickey

Prayers and hugs for you and your precious grandson. I will keep him in my heart and prayers.

wordpaintervs 12-30-2009 08:13 PM

thanks all of you for your prayers. They are working. The
baby, at least for now is stabilized in the L.A. Children's hospital. They are treating him for undeveloped lungs and putting in a feeding tube today. He is full term but it is as if he was not. I will keep all updated as I can. Not to make things worse but at 4 p.m. I got an email from my brother one year older than me, and he tells me they will be scheduling surgery as he has a malignant melonama (Cancer) despite having two lymph glands removed earlier this month. If you can thrown him in with the prayers for the baby I'd love it. Don't know when surgery will be. So happy to know the baby is stabilized and hope it is all uphill from now on. for the newest baby. Thanks to all of you again. I appreciate it so much. Wordpaintervs (Vickey S.)
