Playing well together - cutting scraps

Within the last month someone posted a thread about cutting scraps into specific usable piece sizes such as 2.5" squares, 5 inch squares, etc. I think that the title was something about playing well together. The main idea was cutting pieces so that they would work well together to form blocks. I have searched under many different things in the advanced search but haven't been able to find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bonnie Hunter has a scrap user's system:

She has scores of free patterns on her site that use the sizes she suggests.

There were some ladies out in Yuma with a system they copyrighted as "A Quilter's Lumberyard" that focused on finished 2" segments. So, the cut segments with seam allowance added were similar to this.

2 1/2" squares
2 1/2" by 4 1/2" rectangles
4 1/2" square
2 1/2" by 6 1/2" rectangles

Another thread where the Lumberyard System was discuss: http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...g-t125732.html

edited to add: I have never participated in any of this scrap system, so I am not sure how big they went to with the length's or squares. I think any multiple of 2" finished block would be appropriate.

I don't cut my scraps until I have something I am going to work on.

Me neither. All things considered, the ones I cut would be 1/4" too short!!!

Then you would use the next size up. It is not a "do or die system", just something to get you started organizing your scraps. I cut "most" of mine at 2.5" as that size works great with 1" hexies and in the future I am making a rainbow postage stamp quilt, yea, I know postage stamp is finished 1" squares but I can live with that.

I picked up a book called "Quilt your Stash!" from the publisher of Threads. Projects from Joan Ford's "Scrap Therapy" program. She uses 2", 3.5" and 5".

I cut mine into strips. 2 1/2, 4 1/2, 5 1/2and 6 1/2.. I found this is easier to work with and store than squares. The other advantage is that you are not limited to squares but could also do rectangles.

I don't precut my scraps. If doing a scrap quit with strips it is easier to use long strips sewn together then cut to the size you want. Same goes for making a quilt with squares. The strips are much easier to sew together then cut them into squares. The size will be much more accurate. Just what works for me.
