Please Explain Freezer Paper
I keep reading references to using freezer paper. Could someone explain how it is used with quilting. I wanna learn something new!

I use it in paper piecing. Mr. Domestic has a fantastic YouTube video that explains how to use freezer paper for paper piecing without tearing the paper off after. I really like it.

Freezer paper has several uses due to the fact that the shiny side will stick to fabric with a hot iron. Some people use it the turn under the edge of appliqué pieces. Some people cut out a design and iron it to a quilt top and outline quilt around the paper. It can be used to do paperless paper piecing. You can iron a big piece to your ironing board to keep it clean when using starch. Great stuff freezer paper.

It can also be used for English paper piecing.

I started out using freezer paper for applique. You take a couple of layers of freezer paper, glue them together, cut them out in the shape of your applique. Then you use it as a template for turned-edge applique, you brush the edges of the fabric with starch and iron it. Here's a video: https://youtu.be/G8VAENGWQ1Y
However, I found that the paper quickly became soggy, no matter how many layers I used and how careful I was, and I was unable to get crisp, sharp edges. So I switched to Templar heat-resistant template plastic. That stuff is the bomb. I use freezer paper for patterns, especially for things like blouses. I copy the pattern onto freezer paper, then iron it onto the fabric. No more pinning. |
u can also use freezer paper to stabilize a fabric label so you can write on it... or the freezer paper can be used for patterns or applique... I use it to make bib patterns and I iron it onto the fabric and cut out bibs for the local charity.

I use freezer paper for hand applique. Trace the shape and iron to the back of fabric. Cut 1/4" seam allowance out from the edge of the paper. Baste the seam allowance over the shape. When you have all your pieces basted, you can lay out your design, pin, and applique. Take the paper out as you go by stitching almost to the end of the piece, taking the basting stitches out, and wiggling the paper out before closing it all up. I find this technique results in nice crisp corners. You can use the freezer paper shapes several times before it loses its stickiness. Some people put the paper on top of the piece to be appliqued, but I find it slips if you handle it too much.

And iron it onto fabric for running thru your printer. I use it for drawing panto designs because I can get long strips to fit my frame table.

I use to use Freezer paper for my applique. As long as the pieces are 4" or under it works great to stabilize pieces. For larger applique not as good as it comes apart before you get everything the way you want it. I have gone to using interfacing and doing the turn method for applique works better for me in most instances.
