That last quilt is very interesting to look at. Was it complicated? That I would be interested in doing. Where would I find the layout/pattern for that? Thanks. All of them look good, great job.

Maxine Rosenthal wrote for "One Block Wonder" and Bethany Reynolds wrote the "Stack and Whack" series. They are similar in some respects and you get varied results with both methods, depending on the original material that you select and how accurate you are in your sewing. There are lots of tutorials and pictures on the net.

7x can you please tell me whe company who has this fabric. I simply must have it!!!!! Thanks

brosier 01-18-2011 04:59 PM

OBW = One Block Wonder - made entirely of 1 fabric with large designs and many colors giving a kaleidoscope effect but really pretty - technique is much like Stack and Whack
Stack and Whack = a type of kaleidoscope quilt made by using a repeating pattern fabric and fussy cutting a minimum of 6 identical triangles and then positioning them with the same centers. You have to pin the fabric together exactly matching each pattern and it requires a minimum of 6 layers of the same repeating pattern.

Sure, it is by Legacy Studios and says CP 31120 Polynesia Medallion Floral. I got it at JoAnn's. It's a really nice fabric.

I hope you do get some for yourself. To me it's a perfect fabric for this because it has lots of designs and lots of colors. Some of my blocks are predominately pink, some are predominately purple. It's fun!

love that fabric may I ask where you got it?

mom2boys 01-18-2011 08:20 PM

The stack and wacks looks like it would be a fun one to try

Dee 01-18-2011 09:20 PM

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I wondered about OBW. Now I understand. Thanks for sharing.

Press all the seams open as you sew them.

I always get 5 yards...that way I have enough in case of an error or something disaster..or borders .... or stash..

It's importand to count your repeats...You will need 6 repeats, and if the fabric has a 24 inch repeat that will already require 4 yards. In this case I would go with 5 yards.

Magic, I don't know how you did this, can't even begin to work it out looking at it, but it is beautiful.

Is this the same as the kalidascope (sp) that I see advertised sometimes on this site? I am refering to Quilter7X. I love your fabric and how it goes together.

If you go here
http://www.quiltingboard.com/virtual_section_list.jsp

you'll find the board's Topic List. Look down to the one for OBWs, Stack n Whack and Kaleidoscope Quilts and there's a brief overview of the different kinds. If you click there on the heading, it will take you to a list of all the pictures ppl have posted here on the board of their finished tops and quilts. :-D

Dakota Rose 01-19-2011 08:15 AM

Thanks. I learn so much from all of you.

ConnieF 01-19-2011 01:47 PM

Very good and beatiful fabric to show it

Stack n Whacks can be made with one or more different fabrics in the same quilt.

One Block Wonders (OBW) on the other hand are hexagons using identical stacked repeats of the one fabric all joined together without sashing or other fabric between the blocks.

I hope that makes sense :?

I have used several different fabric prints in one OBW quilt tho. I think that's up to you, if you want to have more than one print. Typically they are one print, but don't have to be. I've seen where the prints are the same, but just different colors.

Eisgoow 01-20-2011 05:56 AM

You did a wonderful job of showing this. Beautiful material to make it easier to notice what you meant. Good job. Thanks
Soooooooo stack means just stacking all same print together AND whack would be ????????

Eisgoow 01-20-2011 05:58 AM

So they are can be squares or triangles. Whack means put them together? The whack is strange word to use.
Thanks
Eisgoow

I think it refers to the speed, ie you just whack em out? Plus, it rhymes with 'stack'

Pzazz 01-23-2011 06:02 AM

Quilter7x....My SIL almost didn't get her C'mas gift last month as it was made with that same fabric. As I was making her pillow cases, my brain kept seeing OBW from the fabric!!! Please share pix as you get this one put together.

Eisgoow 01-26-2011 04:54 AM

Mom - I am new at this and I saw a video and says the panels that are on edge of quilts should have seams facing to edge of quilt. I know that sometimes the bulk is worse than others at corners etc. You say to iron all seams open. Can you give more advise on this please? Exceptions to every rule ??
Thanks,

Eisgoow

Actually, the stack n whack I am working on (or will be soon) is six triangles/hexagons.
One block wonders - - on a four patch, you line up FOUR layers of fabric to get the results that Quilterx7 demonstrated for us <wave>
