Please help ID this thread.
 

What is this thread? I was given it. It has no label. The thread seems thick to me and see how it frays at the ends? Thanks!!

It looks like it might be linen. Linen thread does fray easily and can be a relatively heavy weight thread as this seems to be. From the look of the weight I would not recommend using it in the machine.

I agree with BJ. It's too thick to use in a regular sewing machine. It looks like it might be Pearl Crown Rayon, to me. People use it to crochet with, or use it in your serger's loopers to make a decorative edge.

Is it smooth soft and shiny? I have some embroidery thread (very cheap) that looks like that, and to my surprise it went well in my emb. machine. You can only try it. If too thick to thread the needle, you should be able to use it in the bobbin, matching normal thread in the top, and try decorative stitches - fabric right side down.

If it's strong, it could be the thread used when hand sewing button holes on heavier garments. It's thicker and if you are a neat sewer produces beautiful buttonholes which stand out as a feature. I used to use this (same kind but in matching colours)when I made wool jackets/coats as the buttonholes were nicer than machine ones.

If you are into decorative stitching, you can couch it. If you can't use it, don't toss it. Give it away on this site and just ask for shipping charges. Someone probably can use it.

Couching?? Never heard of it, I'm a noob remember! Now I'll have to look that up. But don't worry, I never throw away anything remotely useful. If I decide I do not want it, I will find a good home for it, either here or with my local quilting buddies. Thanks for your help!!
