I am ALMOST done quilting this quilt, (the picture was taken a few weeks back) and I can't decide on a fabric for the binding. I have enough red or black to do it. I have also been looking for a black and red stripe fabric without success. I don't know what to use. This quilt is for my little sister who is well. OUT THERE!!!! lol Love her to pieces, she has always gotta be center of attention, she is the life of the party, and she is really fun and LOUD!
What would you do? |
Your quilt ROCKS!!! What fabric did you use for the back? I would bind in black.
|
The back is all pieced using the same stuff as the front, which is just black and red Kona Cotton! give me a second and I will try to get a picture of it!

Thank you!!!
Here is the back oops forgot the picture. lol its been a long day! |
justwanna,
I found some black and red strip fabric from andover, here is the website. The line is called Olivia's Big Dreams. I think it would look great with your quilt. If not, what about black on the red side and red on the black side??? https://www.bisoninteractivesecure.com/35thavesewandvac/store/?product_id=7544]https://www.bisoninteractivesecure.c...roduct_id=7544[/url] |
Oh thank you ladybug for the link.
Choices, choices, choices!!! Maybe I will have to play eeny meeny miny mo! lol |
|
Great Quilt...and not as far out there as it could have been  No suggestions on the binding , sorry
|
I love your sister's quilt!!! I think any fabric that is a smaller black and red print or a stripe would look good on this quilt...JMHO for what it's worth  I can't wait to see what you choose :D :D :D
|
How about black binding around the red edges and red binding around the black edges? It looks like you could do half-and-half. There'd be one block with a red edge that would get red binding, and one block with a black edge that would get black binding, but I think that would just add even more character.
I also like bias bindings made out of striped fabric if you can find it. I actually think the idea above, though, is more in keeping with the color-block nature of the quilt. |
I would go with the black. I have learned the hard way that reds and blacks are not always the same when you buy them online so you have to be careful about matching the colors. Details can add so much more to a quilt but sometimes it's better to stay with what's safe!
This quilt is gorgeous, by the way! |
I would use both. Cut them into 8 inch strips and join on the bias. It'll give it a sort of barber pole effect.
|
It is a beautiful quilt.
I can't imagine what you could do with a black and red quilt to make it OUT THERE! unless you put purple with it or something <g>. Red and black is quite a statement on its own and cuddling under it will be a glorious experience. I cannot add any advice to either color ... both are good. |
You need to find a black/red stripe and cut it so that it's piano key style. That would look waaaaaaaaaay cool with this quilt I think.
By the way, LOOOOVE the quilt. Let me know if it needs a home... |

I think the combintation of black/red is a good option...a bit different from the traditional. |
A couple decades ago, my brother married a gal who was "different" in many ways. She was a pretty good sculpture when she worked at it - - an artist type, I suppose you would say.
Her preferred colors were black and red. At the time, it raised eyebrows around the homestead ... but when you see how she put it together, it really was impressive. I was commissioned to make a quilt with a black background. I had shown the people the quilt I intended to make; a red/white and blue Victory quilt. With trepidation, I worked on the quilt the way the daughter wanted it to be ... and, SURPRISE! It was impressive. I suppose all I am trying to say is "out there" may well be the colorway of two decades from now <g> having said all of that ... I would REALLY have to rethink that lime green choice! LOL |
Thank You everyone!
I had the thought at one point in time to use a very HOT PINK fabric for the binding! or there was a time that she bought YARDS of green (like highway worker fluorescent reflective green) faux fur almost like shag carpet! I had to make her a jacket type thing out of it! I thought about using some bright green, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it! although she would probably just love it! lol As far as black fabric. I don't think I like it to much! I don't like quilting with it. It picks up and you can see every piece of anything that get within ten feet of it! I am glad it is going to her hosue and she will be the one responsible for keeping it clean! Is that wrong of me? |
I think I would go with a solid black or red. Stripes or a mix would be too much of a good thing -- in my humble opinion.
|
I would do black along two sides and red along the other two.
|
I know this sounds crazy but it would really look "out there". Use black and white check fabric like a racing flag and be sure and use bias strips for your binding. There is a designer Debra Gabel who is the brains behind Zebra Quilts. She uses that check fabric in a lot of projects. It just gives the quilts a real zing.
|
I did a quilt with a black and white Jacobean print binding. The print is actually large, but when it is cut down, it very, very small. I think the white would look good with the red and black. Edie

Heres one I found while finding the bunny on the fab shop hop

I would go with black. I love the quilt. Black and red are such a striking color combo.
|
Why not do both? Just start sewing random sized strips together and make that your binding.
|
this is an excellent drunk love!!!!!
in your opinion, was this a difficult pattern? What was the hardest part? I want to do one, and have been salivating over this pattern, but much too scared! |
great quilt and I think your "life of the party" sister is going to love it.
|
I really love your quilt. If it were mine, I would look for one of the great red, black and white prints out there and bind it with that. I think it would seit it off nicely.
|
Since you sister is the out there type (how fun) I would find a very deep tone of her favorite color and bind it in that. I can see a deep dark purple being perfect to give the quilt that special unexpected touch.
|
Since you have big blocks of color, my suggestion would be to avoid getting fussy with the border. A plain black binding would help maintain the bold impact of the quilt.

how about using both black and red sewing your strips together alternating the colors
|
Thank you everyone for ideas about the binding! I haven't even touched my machine in two days so I haven't gotten any farther than i was the other day. lol
Trugger, I didn't find it hard at all. What I did was took the book to my local copy shop, had her blow the templates up to the size I wanted them not the size the book said! Then I transfered them onto freezer paper. Then I layered my fabric red back red back just like the book says, and I ironed it on so it wouldn't go anywhere. I am a sucker for starch, I think that helped keep everything in place while I cut the pieces! once I cut the whole block out I layed it out on my ironing board the way it was suposed to be sewn togeher. I was able to layer eight pieces of fabric at a time and cut each set of blocks at the same time. It worked great doing this size! If you don't want to fuss with the temlates there is a SUPER way of doing wonky/chunky log cabins on this blog, which I LOVE by the way! http://tallgrassprairiestudio.blogsp...-tutorial.html One of these days I want to make "Hop Skip and A Jump", and "IcePops"! I also did a version of her "What a Dish" quilt for my son! Honestly I don't know that she has anything I DON'T like! lol Sorry for the book! lol thanks again everyone!! |
