I recently received some quilt pieces that my grandmother had started before she passed away. I am new to quilting and I have no idea how to put these pieces together. Please help me identify the pattern and tell me how to put the pieces together. Notice on the round pattern that there are 2 notches. Some of the circles have 2, some three and some four. Do these two pieces go together or are they separate quilt patterns. HELP!!

The first block is a Dresden Plate, I don't know the second block.

The first picture is a Dresden plate. If you do a search you will see lots of them on the board.
I've never seen the block in the second picture. Sorry!

The second one looks like one I have seen before that was called 9 in the window...it had a circle around it. crafty_linda_b

Two different patterns. The first is a Dresden plate variation. I would take off the pink and applique(stitch down) the red and green plate to a new plain background square. You could then make a pillow out of it, if you only have the one block. The second is a Nine Patch variation I believe. I'm not sure of the name and if you just have the one block maybe make it into a pin cushion?

Is it possible the grandmother made the second block to fit around the dresden plates, since she put in the little pieces of pink to make them round?

They are two different blocks. The second probably had either a full mellon or half mellon piece to make it a square. Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Blocks would probably have the full picture. The first looks like a dresden plate with the triangles in to make it a hexagon or some such shape. INo I was confused by the triangle pieces as they are not all the same. If cut accurately they would make a circle and might have included a corner piece to make it square or appiqued on a square background. It depends on how much of the original stitching you want to keep. I would probably redraw the pattern to make all pieces more accurate and then use some new fabric. They look 30's so it is possible to find solid colors to match the original. The triangle pieces around the Dresden definitely need recutting as they appear to not all be the same. The notchs were there to line up with the joining piece.

That is what I am thinking. The Dresden plate fits around the other block. I have 22 Dresden plate blocks and about 40 of the other blocks. I am unsure how to put it together since some have 2 notches, some 3, and some 4.
