It's Hummer (or Hummers) storm.

On my bucket list!

One block does look like storm at sea but the big one is Snails trail and I just finished a quilt using that block

SusieQOH 09-22-2017 12:20 PM

One block is Snail's Trail. I just did that block for my Shakespeare in the Park.
I love those block combinations!!

Love the red/fuschia fabric in this quilt, and the pop that the aqua block gives!

I recognize Snail's Trail immediately. Unfortunately, due to the horrifically high number of snails (and slugs) that we have in our lawn/garden/sides of house & garage, I'll never do one, lol! I don't care how colorful those things are - and we have yellow, purple, green and brown - they are disgusting!

All I know is - it is very pretty.

I had seen this a couple of years ago and drew it out in EQ. It consists of a main block, the Snail's trail, a corner block in the sashing and a 4x8 sashing block that creates the star. These files may help you in seeing the blocks.

Edited to add: In looking at the quilt more closely, I have to maneuver my snail's trails blocks around. I'll probably have to make a new comment for the improved version.

Yep, by the time I got the blocks flipped, I couldn't revise the prior post. The wings coming out from each 4 inch block are different than I first thought. In EQ I had to flip the blocks to make them end up like the original quilt. So, the colors are reversed in half of the Snail's Trail blocks or at least I'm pretty sure they are. This is a better representation of the original quilt. My first drawing looked more like brocade.

Edited to add: I made another image of the quilt with two color fun spots. EQ is handy for testing out different looks.

This has more blocks and finishes up at 89.5 x 89.5 if sewed perfectly. I thought I would have fun and put two color spots in the quilt. EQ is fun to test color choices.

How about "Contrary Wind"?????

Jane Quilter 09-22-2017 08:13 PM

Caroline....that is a beautiful quilt. And Barb, wow, you have really mastered that EQ software. It's on my bucket list......Jane

Beautiful quilt; will have to add to my bucket list too!

baywinds 09-24-2017 07:46 AM

It is a beautiful layout. I did try that link ( http://www.cherryblossomsquiltingstu...g-pattern.html) PaperPrincess provided, but couldn't find any paper piecing patterns or this pattern specifically. I will try anything paper piecing. Any ideas? Thanks

It's a combination of Snail's Trail and Storm at Sea... very pretty! It's on the cover of Quilt Sampler magazine, Fall/Winter 2014. They call their pattern "Sea Swept" and I believe you can buy it separately now.

Very nice quilt pattern and what an angel Barb is to put her expertise to use for us on the Quilting Board!

Jannie 09-24-2017 06:34 PM

I went looking for the pattern but I guess I don't know what I am doing because I couldn't find it. It is a gorgeous quilt

Claire123 09-29-2017 08:13 PM

Love, love, love the quilt. It reminds me of Shakespeare in the Park a little. Agree with the others on the name. I have to get organized so I can make this.

Thank you for the compliment! I haven't posted pictures b/c I am not tech savey. I have completed 9 quilt tops in the past 3 months. 5 of them are the same pattern design I made using the Deb tucker rulers. I took them to the workshop in September and it went over well! If I can find someone who can post, I will surely show them off!

Claire123 10-03-2017 05:57 PM

Thank you for this. It is just beautiful. I am going to have to get it figured out.

Deb watkins 10-04-2017 07:07 PM

The highlighted area on the demo is not the actual block. It is snails trail, with diamond recs and also square in a square.

Cinderstamp 05-11-2021 12:11 PM

We call this pattern Snails at Sea. It is available at https://www.dawnasdesignthreads.com/...a_Digital.html
as a digital file or there is a paper file also. It is written as a paper pieced pattern which helps to get all of those precise points needed to make this quilt work.

There is also an instructional video available on the website as well!

kristijoy 05-11-2021 12:18 PM

I think its a Snail's Trail block surrounded by sashing. The square parts of the sashing are simply a square in square, then the rectangular parts are 'peaky and spikey' 30-60-90 degree triangles. Is this part the 'Sea' part of the block?
I love this pattern! This is going on my bucket list. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/heart.gif
