I have received a whole bag of East Indian clothing from a fashion designer here in Calgary she told me to go ahead and use it all for quilting. Some of it she has put embellishments on. It is such beautiful stuff.

Should I use it or donate it to a used clothing store?

Thanks!

If you would use it, keep it. If not? pass it on :D:D:D

I just feel so bad to cut it up! :(

mlaceruby 07-18-2010 08:35 AM

I would make a big block quilt.

Hi, it is nice to meet you. Welcome to the quiltingboard.
I am thinking she might have been specific when she suggested you use it for quilting (cut it up and make it look like something other than it does now). Would suggest you ask her permission before you pass it on to be worn. I am thinking she may have had copywright on the patterns or the items themselves. If she says it is okay and you feel they would offer high value to the wearer I am sure there are many who would enjoy them. You are being very nice to consider the needs of others rather than your desire to create. Nice to meet you.

Thanks, Nice to meet you as well. I can't contact her as she has moved away. Thanks for the info!

Aully, I have hundreds of yards of silk, from vintage saris that I have collected over the past couple of years. I have designed some very simple patterns and have made some lovely jackets tops and skirts (I believe in letting beautiful fabric making simple clothes work). I also make scarves and wraps out of it.

The President's Challenge quilt this year is for a crazy quilt, and you guessed it, all of that lovely 24k gold trim is going to make it into that crazy quilt.

I would never wear the material so I would not make diffrent clothing from it. Thanks for your input!

If it is fit to wear, I would *love* to talk to you about any of the outfits. I'm pretty sure I was Indian in my past life. :D I can pay shipping.

LOL I wish I new my past life. It is probably a size small. No tags on it.

Rebecca VLQ 07-18-2010 09:36 AM

Ahhhh, to be a size small in any life would be awesome. Alas, I am not. :D I would wear the scarves, if there are any. Those are one size.

at a quilt show this weekend i saw 2 entries using the embellished east indian fabrics. really pretty

sahm4605 07-18-2010 10:30 AM

I would take and pass half of it on and make a lovely quilt out of the rest. Can you post some pics. I would love to see the fabric. I love Indian dress. they are just so colorful and beautiful.

If she told you to use it for quilting, then by all means, DO so. Stop feeling guilty. No reason to. If you don't want to use it for quilting or if it is not something that is functional for your lifestyle, then find someone who will make good use of it. Once a gift is given away, the receiver is allowed to do with it as they see fit.

Maybe there is a Women's Shelter that can use it. If there are West Indian women and girls there that can use it they will be thankful.

sewcrafty 07-18-2010 12:03 PM

I'm with Pam. If it already has embellishments on it. Instant crazy!!!

CarrieAnne 07-18-2010 12:11 PM

I wouldnt feel bad using it for quilts if thats what she told you to do! Bet they are beautiful!

Linda1 07-18-2010 12:42 PM

I sounds to me that she really qppreciated your quilting and thought the clothing would make beautiful quilts.

Yvonne7 07-19-2010 05:29 AM

You said "It is such beautiful stuff" That mean you like it. So use it. Or do what so many of us do put it a side till you think of a pattern for it.

grammyp 07-19-2010 05:36 AM

I would certainly use it for quilt(s). If the embellishments are suitable, use them in a "texture" quilt for a special needs child/adult.

mom-6 07-19-2010 05:38 AM

I'm getting all kinds of lovely pictures in my head of the spectacular quilted wallhangings that could be made with these!

Moonpi 07-20-2010 04:49 AM

Have you determined what the fabric is made of? Type "burn test" into the search at the top of the page, and there will be lots of threads on how to figure it out.

Before making any decisions, I'd find out what I had, and whether it was colorfast.

quiltergirl80 08-03-2010 01:21 AM

Oh, it would be a gorgeous quilt or summer bed coverlet!
