A friend picked this up at the second hand store. Any ideas how old the pattern and fabric are? Looks like there is enough fabric to finish the quilt. $5.00 lucky find.

Thanks,

I made a dress from that blue checked fabric for my daughter in the early eighties. Alice Brooks has been making patterns since the 30's so the pattern could be older.

great old pattern

Thanks,

What a great find! and only 5.00 you are so lucky! Think this is from the late 50's or early 40's nice fabric..

Too bad we can't enlarge the pic enough to see the date on the paper. I would guess 50's. My grandmother always cut quilt patterns out of the Kansas City Star and saved them.

quiltingbuddy 07-26-2017 03:40 PM

I don't know how old, but the blocks are great! Enjoy!

SusieQOH 07-26-2017 04:41 PM

My guess would be 30s-50s.
They look like feedsacks.
Great find!!!

According to this source:
http://quilthistorytidbits--oldnewly...ice-brooks.php

the Alice Brooks byline started in 1933. Fan quilts were extremely popular in the 1930's, and this Alice Brooks pattern is an interesting variation with the unusual scallops.

The fabrics to me look like 40's and 50's. However, peoples' stashes can included fabrics that stretch for several decades.

sewbizgirl 07-26-2017 08:46 PM

I'd also guess the 50's, tho some of those fabrics look older than that.

JustAbitCrazy 07-27-2017 12:33 AM

I'd say 1930's. This is the first time I've seen that pattern made that way, with two fabrics used to make one fan. Very sweet $5 find! If there are not enough fabrics there to complete the top, it would be best to find similar reproductions for the new blocks.

LindaJ 07-27-2017 02:49 AM

I will say the 40's, go right in between

Karen G 07-27-2017 05:46 AM

I would give you $10.00 for it!!!

Jordan 07-27-2017 06:40 AM

WOW! what a fine and what a great price. That project would be so fun to make. Please share with us when you finish it.

BETTY62 07-27-2017 07:21 AM

Love the fabric. Please post a picture of the quilt when you get it finished.

bkay 07-27-2017 07:34 AM

According to Mr. Google, it was published August 11, 1936 in numerous newspapers, including the Miami (Oklahoma) Daily News.

I'd love to have a copy of the pattern. I looked online and did not find it without subscribing to historical newspapers.

I have a quilt kit that I bought at an estate sale for a Dresden Plate. The pieces are all cut out. All I would need is the center. That looks a lot easier to make than the Dresden plate.

Can I PM you?

bkay

nativetexan 07-27-2017 07:35 AM

I was thinking the 1950's.

Bree123 07-27-2017 02:57 PM

I agree with the 50's because of the brown fabrics. Definitely not earlier than the 40's because that's when the red-yellow-blue prints first came out.

Thanks everyone for your replies. bkay, you can PM anytime.

I would say the pattern is very old but the fabric looks from the 40's.

Cotton Mama 07-28-2017 02:44 PM

Alice Brooks (and Laura Wheeler) quilting patterns were published in newspapers in the 1930s.

tessagin 07-28-2017 03:22 PM

Looks like fun!

just janet 07-29-2017 06:33 AM

My guess would be late 40's early 50's

JoyjoyMarie 07-31-2017 10:45 AM

My guess is that the pattern is fairly old, as many have stated, but the fabrics look like the 60s and 70s to me. Someone took Grandma's pattern and decided to try it in the more contemporary fabrics of the "flower children"

laadw 07-31-2017 12:52 PM

I have some of the same fabric. It was gifted to me from someone's Aunt who had passed away. Enjoy.
