Is it possible to applique on minky?

You can't iron the design on, right? Has anyone ever tried this? If so, did it work or not? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Since it has a pile, it will be harder to appliqué shapes down but not impossible. I would pre-prepare my appliqués with the dryer sheet method and after turning right side out, machine stitch with a looser zig zag stitch around the edge to the Minky before sandwiching the quilt.

I think you will have difficulty stabilizing the Minky sufficiently for machine applique. If the background fabric is not stabilized in some way, chances are great that you will get distortion by the time you finish sewing around the shape. Don't know about hand applique.

This sounds like a good time to experiment with Elmer's School Glue!

I think I would put a thin coat on the back side of the Minky to stabilize it so that it can't stretch. Then, I'd glue the applique piece directly onto the Minky pile to prevent it from shifting while machine stitching it down.

Once the sample's glue has dried it will be time to test out the technique! I don't know if it will work but I can usually do anything if there isn't slipping, stretching, and sliding going on.

I think you can use the same stabilizer on the minky as you would t-shirts...I used NON WOVEN thin stabilizer...it comes in iron on...just put it where the applique is going (on the back of the minky)...not all over the minky...that would be very expensive.

I appliqué on minky. I used Elmer's washable school glue. Worked great.

Thanks everyone! I'm thinking it's time to get the glue out!

I would think that with the Minky being so stretchy that it would be difficult to work with. I used Minky once and will never touch that stretchy stuff again. It is so very soft.
