postage stamp quilt, machine or hand?
I have a lot of 1 1/2" squares that I have cut from scraps. Thinking of hand piecing them. Is this just too much work or try to machine piece them? What have others done?

I don't do hand piecing.... no way. I have done small squares by machine. What I found is that my cutting lacked accuracy, Next time I might try to find a pattern where seams don't need to match.

I applaud anyone who can do hand piecing. I am too chicken to try. Depending on the size you want to make and the amount of time you have, you could go for it.

We don't hand sew anything. That being said, if I were to hand piece something, I would choose something with bigger units than 1" squares.

It would be a good take along project for hand piecing, similar to the he is that everyone seems to be doing. Personally I'd chain stitch by machine. It would also make a good leader/ended project.

Not sure what to say. I love hand work but I don't know if I'd want to do a whole quilt with tiny pieces. Right now I'm doing hexies at night watching TV or whatever.
I'd probably machine piece those babies. You could chain piece them quickly. |
The smallest squares that I keep are 1 1/2 inch. I've made several projects with them, my favorite has been a triple irish chain. I would recommend machine piecing. With smaller squares, there is not a lot of single ply fabric. The seams are half the block. That would get very hard on the hands.

I no longer hand sew anything. I would never hand piece anything. I think it would take way too long for me.

I'm working on a postage stamp quilt, where my squares are 1.5" finished. I'm chain piecing by machine. I personally won't do it by hand, because the size is so small, I would be afraid of it coming apart due to not being able to have 10+ stitches per inch... With 1" finished squares that's very few stitches holding it together.
But I guess it is doable as many great-grandmas made postage stamp quilts by hand. |
no hand sewing for me--but those certainly are small blocks, so....
