Posted Pattern is wrong!

Hi everyone, I have lurked for soooo long and I am soooo mad that I must now actually join the group. Usually I make up my own patterns, but I wanted to throw together a quick project for my friend, and low and behold THE PATTERN IS WRONG! So, after cutting all the pieces, and mindlessly putting them together- the corners are 1/2" off, and I'm sooooo upset. the pattern is hopscotch quilt by laura jones (http://www.studioefabrics.com/docume...lle_Quilt1.pdf) and the picture of all the lines meeting up perfect looks so nice on the pattern! UNTIL you sew it! Ugggh. I posted some pics to show the disaster, and to prove I followed the directions on the link. Hopefully this will save someone else! Anyway, now that I'm done - I love this site! Sarah

sahm4605 05-12-2012 05:40 PM

oh no!!! what a bummer. is there a way to fix it other than ripping it all apart?

StOngeDesigns 05-12-2012 05:43 PM

nope!!!!!!!

StOngeDesigns 05-12-2012 05:47 PM

Well, the corner peices have to be bigger, so I could sew the larger triangle on, and cut off the smaller ones- but the one shown will have to be ripped. hopefully I have enough of the fabric I want to use! Ha!

jcrow 05-12-2012 06:02 PM

I'm so sorry this happened to you too. I had this happen to a quilt I put together and I was so upset when I tried to join the sections together and they were completely wrong. In order to fix the pattern's mistake, I need to rip out every seam and cross seam of this quilt and make each 5" block 1/4" smaller. They should have said 4 3/4". But no, they said 5" charms would be perfect...which I used. They need to actually put together the whole quilt before selling the pattern. My quilt that had incorrect info in the pattern, is now sitting under my cutting table, in sections. I have no desire to rip out every seam and cut each piece smaller. There are hundreds of 5" charms. So, I wasted a lot of time and money that I can't get back and I'll never redo it.

JustAbitCrazy 05-12-2012 06:22 PM

I am so sorry this happened to you! Pattern designers really do need to make the entire quilt, not just parts of it, after they write up the pattern, by following that pattern. And we need to remember to sew together an entire block or quilt section before cutting out all the pieces. Something similar happened to me once. Hard lesson learned. :(

LyndaOH 05-12-2012 06:41 PM

I'm sorry this happened to you! Thanks for the heads up!

As a pattern designer, I not only make the quilt myself but then I make it again after I have written the final hard copy. After that it goes out to five pattern testers before hitting the market.

Have you let Studio E know so they can fix it or take it down?

As for fixing it, have you considering using a strip of applique? It would straddle the long seam.

Tartan 05-12-2012 06:53 PM

So sorry the pattern was wrong. I would not rip out the whole seam. I would snip the threads between the block bottom and the section under it and about an extra inch on each side. I would then cut squares of the blue fabric and sew them on like a snowball block. I wouldn't even remove the blue triangle underneath until I checked the fit. If everthing looked good, I would them cut away all the underlaying fabric back to just the 1/4 inch seam. Then it would be simple to resew sew that section of the seam. I know that doesn't get the perfect fit you were hoping for with the light blue and dark blue but if the blue and tan is fixed to line up, I don't think it will be noticeable. Of course this will only work if you have enough of the blue fabric left. Good luck.

Jingle 05-12-2012 07:35 PM

I suspect the designer just made a block and was in a hurry to put it up. What a shame to not come up with something that could be made and turn out as it should.

dunster 05-12-2012 07:37 PM

Bummer! That is a cute pattern too. We all hope you will continue to contribute to this site. I lurked for a long time too, but it's more fun posting.

BellaBoo 05-12-2012 08:54 PM

That's what I do even with tiny points that get cut off. I applique fabric to make points. I do what makes it work, not fret about why it didn't which is usually my own mess up.

thanks everyone! I feel better after jumping up and down and letting it out!! then I thought about it, and I should have caught the mistake right away. Well, you can do the pattern, but instead of cutting out 36 4" x4" squares, it would be 4.5 by 4.5 inch squares- or what I did was cut 4 7/8 in squares and cut in half, marked 1/4 in seam allowance, and stiched on the line (less fabric waste). big sigh..... looks much better now!!

ckcowl 05-13-2012 03:01 AM

before cutting out a whole quilt with a 'new to you' pattern it is always a good idea to cut out 1 block & put it together to check the sizes, construction, instructions----everyone makes mistakes sometimes- sometimes a designer has it right & the editor changes something- also when getting a pattern from a website it's a good idea to check the (pattern update-fix) page which is generally available that posts when errors that have been found & the 'fix'. i've bought really expensive patterns to find there are errors & had to visit the site to get the corrections- i've learned to never cut out a whole quilt before checking the math/doing a practice block. no point being angry with the source- it is a good idea to send a comment & your pics to show them the error so if it is not on the 'fix' page yet it can be.

Tartan 05-13-2012 05:39 AM

Congratulations, it looks perfect now!

Aunt Bea 05-13-2012 07:59 AM

Well Granddaughter, I'm so glad to see you here. As always, your work is great. Now that you are here I will have to come back more often. I must admit I've been spending more time on knitting sites lately. Didn't realize how much I missed this group. This is the greatest bunch in the world.

RedGarnet222 05-13-2012 08:06 AM

Boy oh boy... has this ever happened to me before too! I guess that is a good lesson learned for both of us, huh? I hope you can take it apart and reclaim the project by fixing the errors. The red rooster fabric cost was too much not to fix it. That is what I had to do with my rythum and blues quilt. It was worth it in the end, but I will never use any of that designer's patterns again!

bluteddi 05-13-2012 08:13 AM

I run across this alot of times in my crochet and knitting patterns.... I tend to follow my own path in quilting... so I haven't ha da major problem.... I know this is frustrating..

Welcome to the the talking world of quilting!

nativetexan 05-13-2012 09:12 AM

one reason i prefer pattern designers to tell you the finished measurement for each section. that helps tremendously!!

Since you actually changed the pattern, you can't blame the pattern. Folded corners are sewn on the line from corner to corner, not a quarter of an inch from the diagonal.

Jeanniejo 05-13-2012 04:18 PM

I know what you're feeling !!! I ordered the panel, pattern and fabric for a "quick" quilt gift, Hoffman fabric Stonehenge fabric. The panel and directions didn't match. Fortunately I read my pattern several times and measure my fabric before I cut. I had to measure every piece before I cut anything. I went to my LQS yesterday and complained about the pattern and he said he had a problem too and called the designer. She told him that if he washed and dried ONLY the panel that the pattern would be fine !!!??????? He did and it was !!! Is this what we have to deal with ?? I'm sorry, be I have had soooo many patterns with mistakes in them lately I figure I could make up a pattern and make money too !!! It wouldn't be so bad if patterns weren't so expensive!!! The publishers need to proof read and know quilting before publishing a pattern.

carrieg 05-13-2012 04:26 PM

Good fix job!

I had a pattern that called for 1/3 yard of fabric, 12" right? Then in the cutting instructions, said to cut 13" squares. I was so upset, but it was for setting triangles, so finagled it and made it work the best I could.

Latrinka 05-14-2012 04:13 AM

Awe, what a bummer!

gollytwo 05-14-2012 04:18 AM

What a bummer.
I second LyndaOH's suggestion that you contact Studio E

And, welcome to the Board

jaciqltznok 05-14-2012 04:36 AM

wow...so glad you caught that and could fix it....hope you let them know!

Caswews 05-14-2012 05:19 AM

Doggone it anyway .. maybe see if the site can help you out ? with more specific directions ? That just stinks ! I have had problems like that on patterns (clothing and quilts),either called or written even emailed to ask for help some sites didnt want to get back with me so that is why I will never use them again, others were very happy to help out.
I hate to rip things out and lord knows how many seam rippers I have thrown across the room !LOL

dottientx 05-14-2012 05:40 AM

On buying a pattern for making a quilt, I'm thinking it would be a nice/good thing to have a photo of an actual quilt in the pattern package, as opposed to just a drawing, which might make the chance of having an error published less likely to happen. It would hopefully show in the construction an error has been made. Just thinking! In my case, if this scenario were to happen, the whole project would probably be shucked to the bottom of the basket never to see the light of day again! Another idea ..... sell what you have done as an UFO and start from square one again! To the new owner, making the corrections might not seem as big to work with!!!! ;-P

StOngeDesigns 05-14-2012 07:07 AM

I did follow the pattern the first time, would have worked if the squares were 4.5", not the 4" the pattern says- the fix was improvised. Thanks for all the support, sometimes you just need to vent a little to make you feel better! the fix was not too bad, and if it was many more peices to fix- it might have been put away, but only 9 blocks need to be fixed- plus I really want to make this quilt- also made a different border of appliqued alphabet. will post a pic when its done!

You might salvage the quilt by making the center three pieces (green blue squares) wider. That would only throw off the quilt by a small amount.

mojo11 05-14-2012 12:24 PM

Oh dear....so sorry this happened to you. Are you going to contact the designer?

SueSew 05-14-2012 12:44 PM

It is a shock to the system, so sorry, but the Board has given all the right suggestions as usual. It's a great group so I hope you will become a contributor too!

For me, thanks for posting because I learned something new - DON'T cut it all up at once. I already knew about on-line updates, I would not use a pattern if the picture looks like something from EQ7, and I almost always test a block. Now of course I'm doing a complicated pattern, have already found errors in the cut directions and misprints in which fabric to put where, and it is a huge center star with a lot of pieced borders so I can't really do too much testing...I'll have to wing it. Maybe that will give me the motivation to try applique!

Welcome, and please keep posting!

ILoveToQuilt 05-15-2012 02:37 AM

Glad to see the fix. Looks good. Please contact the designer so other quilters won't have the problem you did. Please post pics when quilt is finished.

By the way, welcome to the Board!

As a former pattern designer, I wholeheartedly agree! But, then, I was always very fussy about my pattern directions. I figured they would be a reflection on me.

I have also found patterns with errors. It can be very frustrating.

I didn't understand the making the square larger and then stitching and cutting and then placing onto the other fabric to make what I think is a snowball type block but I don't see why the 4"x4" squares wouldnt't work because it would be just one diagonal stitching and then snipping off the excess and it would have filled out that corner area.
