When making a square potholder, do you make it about 8 x 8, or 9 x 9? For a round pot holder how big would you make it?

I made one recently. I used a regular pot holder from my kitchen as my pattern and added for seam allowances.

I am planning on make some for some friends, DMI and my mom. I guess I could have just said my friends. I am thinking of making large ones. I mean think of all of the large pots and casserole dishes. I really hate grabbing two or three. So I am thinking of 12 inch blocks or maybe some rectangles. I will practice some new blocks. Hmmm maybe some hexagons? I am also thinking of making some that are larger for sitting on my counter when we have lots of hot things like at Christmas or Thanksgiving.

Do what you want and what you think would be handy.

I just recently made one using paper piecing technique. It is 6.5 x 6.5.
I found the pattern in a Quiltmaker magazine.
Don't forget to use hear reflective batting when you make your hot pads.
Here is a pic pf mine.

The ones that I make for my craft shows are 8 1/2" or 9" square. Everyone seems to like that size.

I cut out 9" squares, which makes a 8.5 potholder, and I have small hands. I like to grap on to a dish and not get burnt.
Don't forget to use a layer of warm and natural 100% cotton batting and a layer of insulbrite.

Ok I am now ready to cut my batting and insulbrite for the potholders. My next stupid question is: do I cut the batting and insulbrite just 1/2 inch shorter like i do when I make quilting squares?

I like to cut my batting and insulbright 1/2" larger. Then I quilt and trim up.

I make my potholders just like a quilt. I sew binding on it and turn it to the back and hand stitch it.
I would say you make your pot holder, insulbrite and batting all the same size. But thats me!
